The season is heating up now ladies and gentlemen, last week we got our first taste of district matchups in high school ball and it didn’t disappoint. Only Jenks was able to escape their first district matchup with a 2-0 record in 6A-3, Enid and Union split a pair after two great games and Edmond Santa Fe announced their arrival in a big way with a sweep over Deer Creek. We also got the always fun Owasso Festival that included a laundry list of big names from around the state like Owasso, Enid, Sand Springs, Stillwater, Carl Albert, Oktaha, and more. Not to mention the college season continues to excite with matchups like UCO vs OBU who split their two games. Make sure to stick with us here at SSBR, we’ll do the dirty work of keeping up with all these games so you don’t have to.
Matchup of the week (College) – Science and Arts vs Texas Wesleyan
Our matchup of the week takes us to NAIA ball, with a conference matchup between two SAC foes that are in the thick of the fight for the top spot in the standings. Science and Arts will come into this series coming off a dominant sweep over the University of the Southwest, scoring 49 runs in just three games. Texas Wesleyan will come in off a disappointing series loss to Southwestern Christian, however, they did pick up a 14-4 win in the final game so they’ll have some offensive momentum of their own coming into this series.
Top Sooner State Showdown (College) – Connors State vs Seminole State
For our in-state matchup of the week, we’re looking forward to watching some of the best that JUCO ball offers in Oklahoma. This week’s matchup pits last year’s Region 2 champions versus this year’s favorite to take the crown. The winner of this series will have the throne as the top team in the standings, with only one game separating the two coming into the series. Seminole State carries a 13-9 record into the weekend. Still, they’ve shown the ability to beat just about anyone they face off with by beating perennial national championship contender San Jacinto earlier this year. Connors State sits at 22-2, but both losses came last week after starting the season 20-0. Both squads have All-Region level players, and to this point look like the clear top tier in the region, so this series should be a fun one.
Where I’ll be this week – Westmoore vs Mustang and (maybe) Deer Creek vs Carl Albert
Your eyes don’t deceive you, in all likelihood I will be providing live game coverage for two games this week. The first matchup I’ll be in attendance for is a big district matchup between Westmoore and Mustang. Westmoore began the year with a trio of tough losses against top-tier competition at the Five Tool Festival in DFW. However, the Jaguars bounced back with a district sweep to 6A newcomer Lawton Eisenhower. They then dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker in the Moore War but bounced back nicely once again with wins over Norman North and Yukon. For Mustang, the year started nicely with a run-rule win over Noble, but the Broncos haven’t been able to find the win column since. The Broncos have the coaching and talent to right the ship no doubt, so we’ll be watching for them to return to the standard we’ve come to expect from that group before long.
For our second game, we turn our attention to a marquee midweek matchup in Midwest City. Deer Creek began the season in DFW just like Westmoore, but the Antlers found more success than the Jaguars, going 2-1 on the weekend, with their only loss a 1-0 defeat against a Prosper squad that much of the national media has in their nationwide top 25 rankings. In a near mirror of Westmoore, the Antlers’ hot start cooled off quickly once district play arrived, and they dropped both games to Edmond Santa Fe. They got back in the win column with a 3-2 midweek victory over Mustang last week and will look to carry that momentum into this week. Carl Albert represents the best of 5A and will look to make a statement with a big win over a 6A opponent this Thursday. After a district sweep over US Grant to open their year, the Titans took a close one over rival Midwest City, as well as a big win at the Owasso Festival over Oktaha. With another district series against an overmatched opponent this week, Carl Albert will likely have one of their top arms saved and ready for this matchup, something to look out for going into this one.
