During the 2023 high school season, SSBR started a high school “Dominant Dozen” rankings. These rankings were meant to showcase who was thought to be the best teams in the state relative to their classification.
Does that mean we think that a class A team can consistently beat several 6A teams? Some could, but the depth at the higher classes is seemingly higher and there are more stronger teams the higher the class you go.
*That is not to take anything away from small school baseball. There are SEVERAL small schools playing baseball at a high level. Seriously, we love small school ball – just look at our Fall Ball coverage.
Last year’s rankings were done as a one man show. This year they are done by committee and use a points system (1st place = 12 pts, 2nd place = 11 pts, etc). That is why you may see ties.
For the first week’s rankings we looked at results + what we think the potential of the teams are. As we go forward, it will be all about the results.
And as always, this is for fun so please take it that way.
Teams Receiving Votes
(In alphabetical order)
Cashion Wildcats (2A), 3-0; Norman High Tigers (6A), 7-2, Owasso Rams (6A), 5-2; Sapulpa Chieftans (5A) 4-0
12. Silo Rebels (3A), 2-0
Silo makes the jump to 3A this Spring after winning the 2A title in 2023.
After reloading with younger players in the Fall, the Rebels made it to the Class A finals before losing to Rattan. They were also the only team to beat Oktaha in the Fall and did it twice.
The Rebels won their opening series over Atoka with a combined score of 34-1. in their only action last week due to weather issues.
This week: 3/15 @ Valliant
10. Blanchard Lions (4A), 2-0
The Class 4A, 2023 State Runners Up had 5 games scheduled last week, but only got to play 2 of them due to weather. They beat Seminole in both district games 14-0 & 23-0.
Things are scheduled to pick up this week as Blanchard has 4 games scheduled before they head off to Florida for Spring Break.
This week: 3/11-12 vs Harrah, 3/14 at Tuttle, 3/15 vs Newcastle
10. Collinsville Cardinals (5A), 5-0
The perennial state tournament team was able to get all their games in last week. The Cardinals went undefeated including wins over a good Oologah team and 6A Union.
Collinsville has another 5 games scheduled for this week.
This week: 3/11-12 vs Tulas Rogers; 3/14 vs Berryhill; 3/15 at Coweta; 3/16 vs Carl Junction (MO)
8. Oktaha Tigers (2A), 2-1
Oktaha comes into the season as the team to beat in 2A. They have a lineup that is loaded with talent and some good arms on the mound. The only team that beat them in the Fall (Silo) is in 3A and the state champs (Rattan) are in A.
The Tigers also aren’t afraid to play anybody. The 1 “L” is to 5A juggernaut Carl Albert from the Owasso Ram Festival on Saturday. Oktaha had a lead late before giving it up.
This week: 3/12 vs Vian; 3/14 at Eufaula; 3/15 vs Verdigris; 3/16 at Red Oak
8. Choctaw Yellowjackets (6A), 4-0
Choctaw had a nice opening week with a district sweep over alway tough Mustang and wins over Putnam City and Midwest City.
The Jackets schedule doesn’t really pick up until after this week.
This week: 3/11 vs Lawton (DH); 3/15 vs Duncan
6. Sand Springs Sandites (6A), 4-1
If it wasn’t for a hiccup against Norman North in their home district opener, the Sandites would’ve had a perfect week. They showed some grit after that loss in beating an improved Tahlequah team and coming back to defeat a really good Enid team in the Ram Festival.
Sand Springs has another full week ahead before they head out to Florida at the Aggie Classic over Spring Break.
This week: 3/11-12 vs Moore; 3/14 at Victory Christian; 3/15 vs Union
6. Edmond North Huskies (6A), 4-0
The Huskies opened the season with a 2-1 win over Stillwater before handling Putnam City teams over the next 3 games.
Edmond North’s pitching looks dominant as they gave up only 1 run in those 4 games.
The Huskies’ “Edlam” game vs Edmond Memorial got rained out.
This week: 3/11-12 vs Norman High; 3/14 vs Dale; 3/15 at Moore
4. Tushka Tigers (A), 6-0
Tushka has raced out to a 6-0 start, but it is the 6th “W” that is eye catching. They hosted Fall Class A State Champ, Rattan and beat them 9-1.
This past Fall, Tushka had shown at times that they were poised to challenge for a state title until they faded the last week of the season and the regionals. Maybe this Spring will be different for the Tigers.
This week: 3/11 at Varnum; 3/12 vs (2A, #6) Calera; 3/14 at (A, #9) Caddo
4. Washington Warriors (3A), 3-1
The defending 3A State Champs were poised to take the #1 spot in the initial poll. They had beaten a good Mount St Mary team to start the season, #1 (B) Fort Cobb-Broxton, and a solid 4A team in Marlow.
The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Tuttle to start their game. However, Tuttle scored 9 unanswered runs before the game ended at 9-5.
This week: 3/11-12 vs Lexington; 3/14 at Frederick (DH)
3. Edmond Santa Fe Wolves (6A), 5-1
In what looks to be a crap shoot in 6A this year, the Wolves have had the best starts. They have a district sweep over Deer Creek, a win over Mustang, and blowout of 3A state contender Salina (12-0). Their only blemish is to a good Owasso team on their home field.
This week: 3/11-12 vs Yukon; 3/14 vs Piedmont; 3/15 at Westmoore
2. Carl Albert Titans (5A), 4-0
The Titans are the class of 5A and have been for a while. Even before this week, it was a safe bet that Carl Albert is the favorite to win it all in 5A again.
The Titans were supposed to play Owasso in the Ram Festival as well as Oktaha, but weather cancelled the game with the Rams.
While the game vs Deer Creek this week looks like the game to watch, the game at Elgin on Friday may tell us more about what potentially could happen in 5A.
This week: 3/11 at Guymon (DH); 3/14 vs Deer Creek; 3/15 at Elgin
1. Tuttle Tigers (4A), 4-0
Tuttle ended the season at #1 in the Dominant Dozen and by all accounts they have reloaded for another season with the highest of expectations.
Tuttle won their first 3 games by a combined score of 46-0 before they beat Washington in a clash of powers on Saturday.
It is safe to say that Tuttle is going to have to lose or a team is going to have to be on a massive heater to unseat the Tigers from #1. (Although that could happen
This week: 3/11-12 vs Purcell; 3/14 vs Blanchard; 3/15 at Elk City (DH)
