With it being our 2nd season here at Sooner State Baseball Report, we are trying some new things out to make our coverage even better. One of those things is awarding a Player of the Week and a Pitcher of the Week for the various levels. Each week we will send out a nomination form to each head coach and we will pick from those nominations.
We have awards in the small college division (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) and the junior college division.
Here are your winners for the week.
It is getting harder and harder each week to pick just one.
Small Colleges
Player of the Week
Trent Kiraly (C/INF), Oklahoma City University
To be honest, this was the hardest week to pick a winner for the small colleges. We had 4 players in the Sooner State that won their respective conference players of the week (2 were chosen as co-GAC Players of the Week).
Trent Kiraly of Oklahoma City was ultimately chosen as the winner. He has had a monster season for the Stars so far as he is one of the nation’s leaders in home runs. This past week may have been his best week yet as the Stars went 3-1 including a series win over nationally ranked Freed-Hardeman and was chosen as the Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Kiraly’s line: G 4, .588/.611/1.294, 3 HR, 3 2B, 9 RBI
Other nominees:
- Marco Barrera, SWOSU (GAC Co-Player of the Week): .733 (11-15), HR, 7 RBI
- Isaiah Lissade, Oklahoma Baptist (GAC Co-Player of the Week): .688 (11-16), 2 HR, 2B, 3B, 6 RBI (Hit for cycle vs #8 Missouri Southern)
- AJ Folds, Rogers State (MIAA Player of the Week): .625 (10-16), 2 3B, 4 RBI
- Ian Ortiz, USAO: .417 (5-12), 2B, RBI
- Carson Wright, NWOSU: .545 (6-11), 3 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 5 R
- Jhors Gomez, Southwestern Christian: .416 (5-12), OBP .692, 4 2B, 2 RBI, BB
Pitcher of the Week
Isaac Baez (RHP), Mid America Christian University
Last week we had our first two time Player of the Week, this week Baez becomes our first two time Pitcher of the Week. (He was also named the SAC Pitcher of the Week.)
MACU has had some big games and wins this year, but arguably their biggest game was last Friday as the Evangels hosted USAO in the SAC opening series and Baez got the start. Baez did what he needed to do and when he left the game after 7 IP, the Evangels had a 4-1 lead.
Baez’ line: 7 IP, 6 H, ER, 9 K, BB
Other nominees:
- Leandro Tamaki, OK Panhandle St:
4.2 IP, ER
- Jared Adams, USAO: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 7 K, 2 BB
- Jacob Shaw, NWOSU: (SV) 3.1 IP, 4 K, BB
- Kade Shatwell, OCU:
6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K, 2 BB
- Hennry Ogando, Southwestern Christian:
8 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 12 K, 2 BB
Junior Colleges
Player of the Week
Ethan Rossi (OF), NOC Tonkawa
It must have been hard for Coach Keeran to choose just one as the Mavericks put up over 40 runs in 3 games on Redlands. Ethan Rossi was the choice and his line shows why.
Rossi’s line: .556, 2 HR, 2B, 8 RBI, 4 BB, 2 HBP
Other nominiees:
- Dawson Price, Eastern OK State: .500, HR, 5 RBI, 5 R
Pitcher of the Week
Camden White (RHP), Eastern Oklahoma State College
It’s safe to say that Eastern’s season hasn’t gone the way they’d hoped so far, but something must’ve clicked for the Mountaineers this past weekend. They swept their 3 game series vs Garden City CC and Camden White got them started in game 1 of the series.
White’s line: 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, BB
