When Sooner State Baseball Report started last year, we tried to find different and fun content about baseball in the Sooner State that we thought people would enjoy. One of the ways we did that was to start ranking the 30 different college teams in the state. And that’s how the Power 10 was “born.”

Each week until the postseason, we will rank what we think are the 10 best teams in the state relative to their level. We will look at the results of each team based on the level of their competition compared to the other teams in the state.

Does that mean if a junior college team is ranked ahead of an NCAA D1 team we think that JUCO would be the D1? No it doesn’t. But it does mean we think that the JUCO team is playing better than the D1 at their respective levels.

Here is where we think things stand right now (through games on Feb 25).

Please remember this is for fun and should be treated as such.

Teams Dropped From the Power 10

  • Oklahoma Sooners (PR 5): went 0-2 in Las Vegas last week including getting run ruled by Pitt
  • Murray State Aggies (PR 7): went 2-2 last week including a series loss to Western OK State
  • USAO Drovers (PR 8): went 1-2 last week losing a series to MACU
  • Oklahoma Baptist Bison (PR 10): went 2-2 last week including a series loss to NWOSU

Teams Close to Making the Power 10 (in alphabetical order)

Murray State (11-6); OK Wesleyan (12-7); USAO (11-7); Western OK State (13-6)

10. NOC Enid Jets (13-6), NJCAA D2

Last week: NR

The Jets are back in the Power 10 after a 1 week hiatus. The hosted a 3 game series with Carl Albert State to open conference play. Enid came away with a sweep against the Vikings including 2 walk off wins in Saturday’s double header.

This week: Tuesday vs Hutchinson CC; Thursday vs Redlands; Saturday at Redlands (DH)

9. Southwest Oklahoma State Bulldogs (13-7), NCAA D2

Last week: NR

SWOSU is also back in the Power 10 after a 1 week hiatus. The Bulldogs had lost 2 straight series to open GAC play and a close midweek game at UCO, but they got back on track sweeping Southeast OK State including a wild 16-15 comeback win in game 3.

This week: Fri-Sat at East Central (3 games)

8. Oklahoma City Stars (14-8), NAIA

Last week: NR

OCU comes in at #8 this week after being out of the Power 10 for a few weeks. The Stars had a 6 game skid, but since then they’ve won 6 of 8 including winning this past weekend’s series vs #25/#16 Freed-Hardeman. Their 2 losses during that time were to Freed-Hardeman and #10/#9 Missouri Baptist. OCU went 3-1 last week picking up a win against a good OK Wesleyan team on Tuesday.

This week: Fri-Sat vs MACU (3 games)

7. NOC Tonkawa Mavericks (15-6), NJCAA D2

Last week: NR

The Mavs had a hiccup a few weeks ago that saw them lose 3 straight to Pratt CC. Since then, Tonkawa has won 6 of 8 including a 3 game sweep over Redland to start Region play. The Mavs outscored the Cougars 38-13 in their double header and hit 7 home runs in the 2 games.

This week: Mon at NWOSU JV; Fri-Sat at Murray State (3 games)

6. Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-4), NCAA D1

Last week: 9

The Pokes had an interesting week last week. In their last game in Texas, Dallas Baptist run ruled OSU. However, the Cowboys had a “Get Right” series at home vs Central Michigan.

From this week’s “Five Things”

Let’s face it, over the first 2 weeks of the young season, the supposed strength of the Cowboys team, the offense, has been less than consistent. OSU finally got to play in O’Brate this weekend, and the bats definitely showed up.

The Cowboys came into the weekend with a 4-4 record and needing something to feel good about. They got it with wins of 7-4, 8-1, and 19-0. OSU also showed the potential power their lineup has with a total of 8 bombs in the 3 games with 4 on Sunday alone.

This week: Tues-Wed vs Utah Tech; Fri-Sun vs Mercer

5. Northwest Oklahoma State Rangers (13-6), NCAA D2

Last week: 6

The Rangers are showing that they may very well be the class of the GAC on the Oklahoma side. They have series wins over Ouachita Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist and won a game on the road at Henderson St to avoid the sweep.

After losing a close midweek game to Rogers State, the Rangers returned to the road to play the Bison in Shawnee. The Rangers won game 1 and came back to win game 3 after being blown out in game 2.

This week: Tues at Newman; Fri-Sat vs Southern Nazarene (3 games)

4. MACU Evangels (11-6), NAIA

Last week: 4

MACU went 2-2 last week, but it’s when the 2 wins happened that matters here.

After dropping a midweek game to Tabor (which MACU led most of the game), the Evangels had a big opening SAC series against USAO. The Drovers have a long history of being a thorn in MACU’s side. The Evangels won game 1 on a walk off and held on to win game 2 by a single run as well to clinch the series. USAO won the 3rd game by a run.

This week: Wed at Tabor; Fri-Sat at OCU (3 games)

3. UCO Bronchos (14-4), NCAA D2

Last week: 2

The Bronchos drop another spot this week after losing their series vs Missouri Western at home. They did beat a good SWOSU team in the midweek game, and when you add that to their good overall record they stay in the top 3.

After an away double header on Tuesday at OBU, the ‘Chos travel to Wichita for a set vs Newman this weekend.

This week: Tues at OBU (DH); Fri-Sun at Newman

2. Rogers State (13-4), NCAA D2

Last week: 3

The Hillcats’ 9 game winning streak came to an end on Saturday to a good Fort Hays State team, but Rogers State still won the series over the Tigers 2-1. Couple that with a good win over NWOSU in the midweek game, and the Hillcats move up to the #2 spot.

Rogers State is sitting atop the MIAA standings along with Central Missouri and Missouri Southern at 5-1.

This week: Tues at SE Oklahoma St; Fri-Sun vs Pittsburg State

1. Connors State Cowboys (20-0), NJCAA D1

Last week: 1

Connors State just keeps chugging along and they opened Region play last week with a convincing 3 game sweep of NEO. The Cowboys have played better competition as of late, but it doesn’t seem to matter and they keep winning ball games.

This week: Mon at ASU Mountain Home; Thurs vs EOSC, Sat at EOSC (DH)
