With the advent of the OSSAA high school season this past week, we had wall-to-wall baseball in the Sooner State. For the first time this season, all 32 college teams played over the weekend, and almost all of the few hundred high school teams played at least 1 game.

Yeah, it was busy. (Want to help us with covering? Let us know.)

1. OSU gets right over the weekend

Let’s face it, over the first 2 weeks of the young season, the supposed strength of the Cowboys team, the offense, has been less than consistent. OSU finally got to play in O’Brate this weekend, and the bats definitely showed up.

The Cowboys came into the weekend with a 4-4 record and needing something to feel good about. They got it with wins of 7-4, 8-1, and 19-0. OSU also showed the potential power their lineup has with a total of 8 bombs in the 3 games with 4 on Sunday alone.

2. NWOSU & SWOSU are the class of the Oklahoma schools in the GAC (currently)

Through the first 2 weeks of GAC conference play, each school played another team from Arkansas with mixed results. OBU swept Arkansas Tech the first weekend then turned around and got swept by Harding the second weekend. NWOSU won their first series over Ouachita Baptist only to lose their next series to Henderson St. SWOSU lost both of their first two series, 1-2.

This past weekend both teams made cases to be the best Oklahoma team.

NWOSU went into Shawnee and won their series at OBU 2-1. After winning game 1 on Friday, the Rangers got run ruled in game 2. They showed the same grit they’ve shown so far this season and won game 3.

SWOSU hosted Southeast OK State and after winning the first 2 games handily, the Bulldogs found themselves down 13-5 in the middle of the 6th. SWOSU then scored 9 runs in the bottom of the 6th. After allowing 2 runs by the Savage Storm, the Bulldogs then scored 2 in the bottom of the 7th to walk it off and sweep SEOSU.

Both NWOSU and SWOSU sit at 5-4 in conference play and sit in a tie for 4th with Arkansas Tech, Henderson St, and Ouachita Baptist.

3. MACU & OCU have impressive weekends

MACU has had some impressive wins so far in 2024. As we’ve said many times, they arguably have the best 2 wins of any team in the Sooner State so far this year.

This past weekend, however, none of that mattered as they opened SAC play against long time foe, USAO. If MACU wants to really be a contender for the conference title, winning the series vs the Drovers would go a long way towards that.

That is what the Evangels did. They won a tightly contested series 2-1 with all three games decided by 1 run.

OCU, on the other hand, didn’t open conference play, but they hosted #25 Freed-Hardeman (#16 per NAIABall.com). The Stars swept the double header on Friday before losing game 3 on Saturday. Nonetheless, the Stars won a series against a top 25 team to end their non-conference slate at 14-8.

Interesting note: these two teams meet each other this weekend for a 3 game set.

4. OK Wesleyan sits atop the KCAC standings

OKWU started the season with a tough road trip to Florida that culminated with a 3 game sweep at #1 Southeastern. What they’ve done so far in KCAC play over 3 weeks, however, has been impressive. The Eagles are 8-1 in KCAC play and are 1 game ahead of Avila and Tabor.

The Eagles swept Southwestern this weekend after sweeping Friends the previous weekend. OKWU did lose 1 game to St Mary.

OKWU should keep their winning ways going this weekend as they host York (0-6).

5. The OSSAA high school season started

The 2024 high school season got started last week and we already saw the first “upset” of the season. Class 3A Salina went into Owasso and defeated one of the favorites in 6A. After jumping out to a 4-1 after 3 innings, the Wildcats added 2 more in the 6th to eventually win 6-3.

Now, Salina being good is not something that we didn’t expect, but the fact they never trailed in the game against Owasso is impressive.
