When Sooner State Baseball Report started last year, we tried to find different and fun content about baseball in the Sooner State that we thought people would enjoy. One of the ways we did that was to start ranking the 30 different college teams in the state. And that’s how the Power 10 was “born.”
Each week until the postseason, we will rank what we think are the 10 best teams in the state relative to their level. We will look at the results of each team based on the level of their competition compared to the other teams in the state.
Does that mean if a junior college team is ranked ahead of an NCAA D1 team we think that JUCO would be the D1? No it doesn’t. But it does mean we think that the JUCO team is playing better than the D1 at their respective levels.
Here is where we think things stand right now (through games on Feb 25).
Please remember this is for fun and should be treated as such.
Teams Dropped From the Power 10
- SWOSU Bulldogs (PR 9): went 1-2 last week (dropped 2nd straight conference series)
- NOC Enid (PR 10): went 2-4 last week
Teams Close To Making The Power 10 (in alphabetical order)
NOC Enid (10-6); NOC Tonkawa (12-6); OCU (11-7); SWOSU (10-6); Southwestern Christian (11-4)
10. Oklahoma Baptist University Bison (9-5), NCAA D2
Last week: 2
It was a rough week for the Bison as they got swept in their first conference road series. Losing to Harding, a team that is 12-2, isn’t something to worry about. However, losing all 3 games and 2 of them by scores of 7-0 and 10-5 doesn’t look good.
The question is, “What team is OBU? The team that swept a solid Arkansas Tech team or the team that got swept by Harding?” The answer is probably somewhere in the middle.
The Bison better figure it out quick because they’ve got a big series hosting NWOSU this coming weekend.
This week: Tues vs Missouri Southern; Fri-Sat vs NWOSU (3 games)
9. Oklahoma State Cowboys (4-3), NCAA D1
Last week: NR
Yes, 4-3 is not a very good record. Buuuut, that series loss to Sam Houston State was to a good team. A good enough team that is ranked in some polls this week.
The Cowboys did win 4 in a row before Sunday including what could be the best win in the state so far this year: a 14 inning, 2-1 victory over #2 Arkansas on a squeeze play.
This week: Tues at Dallas Baptist; Fri-Sun vs Central Michigan (3 games)
8. USAO Drovers (10-5), NAIA
Last week: 8
The Drovers went 3-1 this week missing out on a sweep in Kansas City to Kansas Christian College losing 1-0. Honestly, they would usually move up in the rankings, but that loss was KCC’s first win of the season.
No matter, because Sooner Athletic Conference play starts this weekend with a series at MACU.
7. Murray State College Aggies (10-6), NJCAA D2
Last week: NR
From this week’s “Five Things You Should Know”
Looking at the Aggies’ current record of 10-6, one might think Murray State is not having the season they are accustomed to lately. When one looks at their schedule and see that the Aggies are on a 5 game winning streak, one would realize the 10-6 record isn’t a bad one.
The Aggies started the season playing Texas traditional powers Grayson CC and Navarro. Then MSC played a double header at Connors State. They also played a 3 game set at #3 Pearl River CC.
This past week Murray State swept a double header vs NE Texas CC and a 3 game series vs Arkansas St Three Rivers.
After a game vs Dallas College Richland, MSC starts Region 2 play at fellow power Western OK State.
This week: Monday vs Dallas College Richland (won); Friday-Saturday vs WOSC (3 games)
6. Northwest OK State Rangers (11-4), NCAA D2
Last week: 3
The Rangers ventured away from Alva for the first time in 2024 last week when they played a GAC 3 games series at Henderson St. NWOSU was one of only two teams from Oklahoma to win a GAC game last week (SWOSU won 1 vs Ouachita Baptist). All told, the Rangers went 2-2 last week with a win against Emporia State during the midweek.
NWOSU has a big week ahead. On Tuesday, they travel to Claremore to take on Rogers State who has won 7 games in row. Then they have a 3 game series in Shawnee vs OBU in which seems like a series with big implications in the GAC.
This week: Tuesday at Rogers St; Friday-Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist (3 games)
5. Oklahoma Sooners (5-3), NCAA D1
Last week: 4
After going 2-1 in the opening weekend in Arlington, the Sooners went 3-2 last week. The stayed in the DFW Metroplex on Tuesday and lost a close game at Dallas Baptist who are now ranked in the top 25. Over the weekend, the Sooners took 3 of 4 games over Wright State who is returning a large portion of it’s roster from a Horizon League championship team last year.
The Sooners still have one of the best wins in all of college baseball defeating Tennessee in extra innings during the opening weekend.
This week: Fri-Sun at the Las Vegas Baseball Classic (Pittsburgh, California, Ohio State)
4. MACU Evangels (9-4), NAIA
Last week: 6
MACU had a scheduling quirk last week. Due to cold weather, their series in Kansas got pushed back to where they finished on Monday. They then had to play the next day in their home opener vs a 10-3, Friends U team.
No worries for the Evangels as they won both games to move their current winning streak to 7 games.
OU and OSU may have the best wins of the season so far, but MACU has the best 2 wins in beating top ten teams LSU Shreveport and Missouri Baptist.
Another big week ahead for MACU as they host (RV) Tabor and USAO in their SAC opening series.
This week: Tuesday vs Tabor; Friday-Saturday vs USAO (3 games)
3. Rogers State Hillcats (10-3), NCAA D2
Last week: 7
From this week’s “Five Things You Should Know”
The Hillcats started the season losing 2 games at the Dugan Invitational in Hot Springs, but they’ve won 7 in a row and 10 of their last 11 to run their record to 10-3.
During this 11 game stretch, the Hillcats have outscored their opponents 92-59. This past weekend, Rogers State didn’t score less than 10 runs scoring 10, 12, and 13.
Things get tough for the Hillcats this week as they face NWOSU on Tuesday and Ft Hays State ovner the weekend. Both teams have a record of 11-4 coming into the week.
This week: Tues vs NWOSU; Friday – Sunday vs Ft Hays State (3 games)
2. UCO Bronchos (12-2), NCAA D2
Last week: 1
UCO went into their big series at #3 Central Missouri riding an 11 game winning streak. It’s safe to say things didn’t go well for the Bronchos in game 1 as they lost 15-2. UCO led most of game 2, but fell 6-5. The ‘Chos then took it to the Mules in game 3 to salvage a win in the series by winning 17-7.
While it was disappointing that UCO didn’t win the series, they did show some grit by winning game 3 after losing the first 2 in the manner they did. That’s why they don’t fall past #2.
This week: Tuesday vs SWOSU; Friday-Sunday vs Missouri Western (3 games)
1. Connors State Cowboys (17-0), NJCAA D1
Last week: 5
Last week Connors State came in at #5 mainly because of their schedule. This past week, the Cowboys played more NJCAA competition and it has gotten to the point where they can’t be denied at #1 right now.
From this week’s “Five Things You Should Know”
Winning your first 17 games in a row is impressive. However, when you realize that Connors State went 50-7 in 2023 and had winning streaks of 22 and 15 during the season it should be a surprise.
The Cowboys have been absolutely dominant so far this season and this past week was no different. This past week was a tougher week than they’ve had so far. On Thursday, CSC traveled to Poteau to take on a resurging Carl Albert State team and they won a close game 8-6. Connors then went to Mena, AR to take on UA Rich Mountain in a double header on Saturday. They blanked the Bucks 15-0 and 11-0.
This week: Thursday @ NEO; Saturday vs NEO (DH)
