With it being our 2nd season here at Sooner State Baseball Report, we are trying some new things out to make our coverage even better. One of those things is awarding a Player of the Week and a Pitcher of the Week for the various levels. Each week we will send out a nomination form to each head coach and we will pick from those nominations.

We have awards in the small college division (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) and the junior college division.

Here are your winners for the week.


Small Colleges

Player of the Week

Lance Barnett (INF/OF), Cameron University

The Cameron Aggies have struggled this year starting the season 0-12. One of the bright spots, however, has been Lance Barnett. The senior has a batting average of .417 on the season with 8 XBHs in those 12 games.

This weekend saw Barnett with a performance that raised those stats to where they are now. He batted .526 (10-19) with a HR, 2 2b, 3B, 6 RBI, and 4 runs scored. In Sunday’s series finale, Barnett had 4 hits on the day with the HR and 3 of the 6 RBIs for the week.

  • D’Andre Gaines, MidAmerica Christian University: .700 (7-10), 2 2B, 3B, 7 RBI, 3 SB

Pitcher of the Week

Isaac Baez (RHP), MidAmerica Christian University

Isaac Baez has been a cornerstone for the Evangels pitching staff the last 2 seasons. He has been clutch in big games such as MACU’s two wins vs top 10 opponents this year. He’s got the W in both games throwing 8.2 innings with 0 runs allowed and 9 Ks in those 2 games combined.

Baez is a strikeout pitcher. He pitched 93 Ks in 86 innings pitched in 2023 and he showed how good he can be this past weekend. Baez’ line: (W) 6.2 IP, 2 R, H, 15 Ks, 0 BB.

Junior Colleges

Player of the Week

Andrew Tinsley (OF), Murray State College

In the 4 games that Tinsley played this past week, he was so good that he raised his average over 100 points. His average increased from .267 to .370.

Tinsley’s line for the week: G 4, .529, HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 5 R, 5 SB

Pitcher of the Week

Jack Henry Pettit (RHP), Carl Albert State College

The Vikings are riding a 5 game winning streak with their pitching leading the way. In the first game of a double header against Labette, it was Jack Henry Pettit’s turn to lead the way.

Pettit’s line: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, 6 K, 3 BB

It was an extra inning affair that the Vikings won.
