With it being our 2nd season here at Sooner State Baseball Report, we are trying some new things out to make our coverage even better. One of those things is awarding a Player of the Week and a Pitcher of the Week for the various levels. Each week we will send out a nomination form to each head coach and we will pick from those nominations.
Since the NCAA D1 season hasn’t started yet, we have awards in the small college division (NCAA D2, NAIA, NCCAA) and the junior college division.
Here are your winners.
Small Colleges
Player of the Week
Alex Schroeder (C/1B), Oklahoma Baptist University
The Senior from Rocklin, CA has had quite the career at the plate for the Bison. After hitting 21 bombs in his first season on Bison Hill as a Sophomore, Schroeder led the GAC with 23 homers in 2023. He started the 2024 season just the same with 2 HRs in the first game of the season then 2 more this past weekend vs New Mexico Highlands. It was the 1st home run vs NMHU that was significant as it put Schroeder at the top of the career home run list for OBU.
For the week, Schroeder was even more impressive than just his 2 home runs. He hit .500 (6/12), OBP .650, SLG 1.250, 2 HR, 3 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 7 R, OPS 1.900
Other nominees:
- C.D. White , Northeastern State: 10-17; .590/.590/1.235, 2 HR, 2B, 2 3B, 14 RBI
- Kyle Williams, MACU: .667 (6-8), 2B, RBI, SB
- Joseph Boone, Southwestern Christian: .500 (4-8); HR, 2B, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 2 R
- Dylan Bradford, Northwestern OK State: .625 (10-16), 3 2B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 3 SB, 6 R
Pitcher of the Week
Carlos Escobosa (RHP), MACU Evangels
Escobosa, a Junior from the Dominican Republic, showed some grit on the mound this past week. At the Cajun Collision and with the Evangels needing a win after losing 3 of 4 the previous weekend, Escobar came in the game vs Georgetown College in the 4th inning and MACU trailing 1-0. All Escobosa did was dominate the Tigers allowing for the Evangels to come back and win the game 2-1. (MACU rode that momentum into the next game and beat a top 10 team in Missouri Baptist.)
Escobosa’s line: (W), 3 IP, H, 0 R, 8 Ks, BB
Other nominees:
- Bryant Thornton, Oklahoma Baptist: G 1, (SV) 3.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 5 Ks
- Jacob Shaw, Northwest Oklahoma State: G 2 (W, SV), 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 Ks, BB
- Henrry Ogando, Southwestern Christian: G 1, GS 1,
6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 11 Ks, BB
- Preston Giltner, University of Central Oklahoma: G 1, GS 1,
7.0 IP, H, 0 R, 6 K, BB
Junior Colleges
Player of the Week
Landen Johnson (1B), NOC Tonkawa
The Mavericks unleased an offensive onslaught on Hesston College last week and Landen Johnson led the way. The High Point signee just added on to what was already an impressive start to the 2024 season.
Stats: G 4, .600 (9-15), 2 HR, 5 2B, 8 RBI, 2 BB
Other nominees:
- Easten Andrews, Redlands CC: .410 (7-17), 2B, 9 RBI, 2 BB
- David Stanley, Connors State: .500 (9-18), 2 HR, 2B, 3 3B, 15 RBI
Pitcher of the Week
Chase Pair (RHP), Connors State
The Red Oak High School alum has already shown to be an invaluable asset out of the pen for the Cowboys. Pair came in relief against Murray State with the score tied. He did not allow a hit in his 2.1 IP against the Aggies and that allowed the Cowboys to put the game away. He also picked up another win earlier in the week.
Stats: G 2 (2 W), 5.1 IP, 3 H, ER, 8 Ks, 3 BB
