With another week in the books, it’s time to take a look forward to the best of week three.
First, let’s take a look back at how the games in last week’s “What to Watch” went down. Starting with the matchup of the week, Oklahoma Wesleyan vs Southeastern (FL), the Eagles looked to finish their early season road trip to Florida with a big resume boost over the top-ranked team in the country. However, Southeastern’s offense was too much for Wesleyan to overcome, falling to the Fire in three straight games. Moving to the top Sooner State showdown of the week, we tabbed a doubleheader between Connors State and Murray State as a big-time series. Although it resulted in a 2-0 sweep by the Cowboys, we got extra innings in game one and had a tie game going into the bottom of the fifth in game two.
This Week
With multiple schools around the state facing off with ranked opponents, there were plenty of options to look at this week. Also, as the season begins in Division 1, it’s easy to look at those schools and think of them as the biggest matchups of the week, however, in this series, we are going to focus on the smaller schools in the state which don’t get as much coverage.
Matchup of the week (College) – Oklahoma City vs MidAmerica Nazarene
One of a few teams across the state hosting a ranked opponent this week, we’ve tabbed this matchup as the best in the state this week.
The Stars got off to a scorching 8-0 start this season before dropping their last two games to end last week, putting them at 8-2 coming into a full weekend of games.
They’ll play four games in two days on Friday and Saturday, facing off with MidAmerica Nazarene and Doane University two times each. Our focus is on the two games against top-15 opponent MidAmerica Nazarene, who comes into this week at 4-4, but has more than enough talent to give the Stars a battle on their home field.

Top Sooner State Showdown (College) – Northeastern State vs Southeastern Oklahoma
In an early season rematch, NSU and SEOSU will face off for the second time this season on Tuesday. Both teams enter this one on winning streaks, with Southeastern coming off a sweep of Newman (KS) and Northeastern a sweep over Southern Nazarene, as well as a win over Southeastern to kick off the streak.
The first matchup between these two teams was a turning point for the Riverhawks, who came into that game sitting at 0-4 under first-year head coach Sunny Golloway. NSU has turned it around after that tough start and has clawed its way back to .500, with a chance to sport a winning record for the first time this year if they can complete the sweep in this two-game season series.
For the Savage Storm, their first matchup with NSU remains the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record, completing sweeps before and after the loss over UC-Colorado Springs and Newman. A close 5-3 final in the first game of the years points to us being in for another close game in the second edition of this in-state battle.
Where I’ll be this week – Seminole State vs Butler CC (UCO JUCO Festival)
After not being able to get to any games last week, we’ll be back on the road this week, heading up to UCO once again, this time for the JUCO festival the Bronchos will be hosting.
This Thursday, we’ll be at the 5:30 matchup between Seminole State and Butler CC (KS). The Trojans come into this week off a 1-2 showing in Texas last week, however, their lone win came against perennial JUCO power San Jacinto. Butler enters the week without a blemish on their record, coming out of the gates at 3-0, but two of those wins came against Northwest Oklahoma State’s JV squad. The two squads ended their seasons last year with similar records, and look to be evenly matched again this year, so this should be a fun one to watch.
