1. NWOSU, OBU, SEOSU, SWOSU, UCO, NSU Perfect On the Weekend

All 6 of these teams swept their respective series this past weekend going a collective 22-0. All but Northeastern St beat teams from outside the Sooner State (NSU swept SNU in 3 games).

The results:

  • Northwest OK State vs Truman St (4-0): 10-8, 6-1, 8-2, 104
  • Oklahoma Baptist vs New Mexico Highlands (4-0): 17-5, 10-7, 7-5, 10-8
  • Southeastern OK State vs Newman (3-0): 13-0, 12-11, 10-5
  • Northeastern St vs Southern Nazarene (3-0): 18-8, 17-3, 6-2
  • Southwest OK State vs Adams St (4-0): 12-5, 10-5, 6-3, 6-1
  • UCO vs Arkansas Monticello (4-0): 9-4, 2-1, 4-0, 5-2

*NWOSU & SWOSU both went 5-0 on the week with midweek wins vs Newman and #23 Missouri Western respectively. NSU went 4-0 on the week with a midweek win vs SEOSU which is the Savage Storm’s only loss on the season.

2. UCO Pitching Is Dominant Through The First Two Weeks

Piggy backing off the first point, the UCO Bronchos are one of 2 teams with 8 wins already, but they are the only one that is undefeated (Oklahoma City University is 8-2).

How the ‘Chos are doing it through the first two weeks is intriguing to say the least. In a sport that seems to be turning more and more offensive, UCO has gotten it done on the mound. Through 8 games, UCO has a team ERA of 2.11 and a team WHIP of 1.08. In 64 cumulative innings pitched, the Bronchos have given up only 45 hits against 72 Ks and only 24 BB.

The 4 starting pitchers: Dax Sharp, Brett Pense, Caleb Burchfield, and Preston Giltner have a cumulative ERA of 1.29 (!) against 40 Ks, 10 BB, and only 25 hits.

Impressive.

3. MACU Impressive in the Bayou State

The annual Cajun Collision was modified from a 4 day event to a 2 day event due to rain this season. So most of the teams scheduled to play only played 2 games instead of the usual 4.

MACU drew a Georgetown College team that came into the event 3-0 and a Missouri Baptist squad that was preseason #10 in the NAIA Coaches Poll and currently the #8 team in the NAIA Poll.

In the Georgetown game that started at 9:30 a.m., the Evangels struggled to put runs on the board, but their pitching kept them in the game. After trailing 1-0 since the 1st inning, Anthony Hampton homered in the 6th inning to tie it then Jordan Crawford knocked in Noel McGarry-Doyle to go ahead 2-1.

Carlos Escobosa came in the game in the 5th inning and got 8 out of 9 outs via strikeout to hold Georgetown in check to earn the win and the MACU 2-1 win.

In the game against MBU, the Evangels jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the 3rd and never trailed. They added home runs in the 6th by Caden Harris and Noah Prince to go ahead 6-1. They won the game 6-3 for MACU’s 2nd top ten win of the season (#5 LSU Shreveport).

4. NOC Tonkawa Drops Bombs On Hesston

When the schedule came out, the Mavericks did not have games scheduled for this weekend. On Thursday they announced that they would play 3 games at Hesston College.

I think it’s safe to say the Larks regret that decision to play Tonkawa.

In the 3 game series, NOC Tonkawa absolutely dominated Hesston by scores of 30-6, 22-2, 20-2. The Mavericks had 6 home runs alone in game 1.

I don’t know if Hesston is a good team or not, but I do know that they played in the Great Plains District Tournament last year and beat Murray State for what that’s worth.

Also, 6 home runs in batting practice is impressive so Region 2 better watch out this season.

5. A New Home Run King on Bison Hill

Oklahoma Baptist University has a long tradition on the diamond. So when a player becomes a new record holder in a category like home runs, it is a big deal.

Alex Schroeder had 2 home runs on the weekend, but it was the first one that etched his name in the record books.

Schroeder now has 48 career home runs in a Bison uniform and it was the 47th put him over the top.

From a Bison alum to another, congrats Alex. Go with Ka’ Rip.
