Several baseball players who played high school baseball, college baseball, or both in the state of Oklahoma are giving it a go in professional baseball.

This offseason we will take a look at how they did in 2023 and in some cases, how they’ve been doing overall or their or their prospect for the future.

We will be looking at the players who are on an affiliated baseball team’s roster – those in a MLB team’s organization.

Let’s start with those players in AL East organizations.

  • A – Delmarva Shorebirds

Baltimore Orioles

No Oklahoma players were on the MLB rosters for the Orioles.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

  • Jackson Holliday (INF), Stillwater High School, Class of ’22

2023 Stats: 125 games; .323/.442/.499; OPS .941; 12 HRs; 75 RBIs

Holliday played at all 4 levels in his first full year in the minors. Although he is only 18 months removed from his high school graduation, Holliday is already considered the #1 overall prospect.

Holliday was so good this year, he was voted the MiLB Hitting Prospect of the Year.

Bowie Baysox (AA)

  • Jensen Elliott (RHP), Oklahoma State ’16-’19

2023 Stats: 10 G, 13.2 IP, 0-1, 0.66 ERA, 7 Ks, 5 BB

Elliot battled injury most of the season. He was placed on the IL on May 19 and didn’t come off until June 6. Elliot was placed back on the IL on June 17 and didn’t pitch again in 2023.

Aberdeen Ironbirds (A+)

  • Carson Carter (RHP), Oklahoma Sooners ’20-’21

2023 Stats: 30 G, 37.2 IP, 2-5, 3 SV, 4.30 ERA, 46 Ks, 24 BB

  • Jake Lyons (RHP), Oklahoma State ’19

2023 State: 21 G, 6 GS, 62.2 IP, 6-3, 2 SV, 4.16 ERA, 71 Ks, 20 BB

Boston Red Sox

Affiliates

  • AAA – Worcester Red Sox
  • AA – Portland Sea Dogs
  • High A (A+) – Greenville Drive
  • A – Salem Red Sox

Boston Red Sox

No Oklahomans were on the roster for the Boston Red Sox

Worcester Red Sox (AAA)

No Oklahomans were on the roster for the Worcester Red Sox

Portland Sea Dogs (AA)

  • Isaac Coffey (RHP), Oral Roberts ’19-’22

2023 Stats: G 23, GS 22, 117.2 IP, 11-6, 3.37 ERA, 155 Ks, 33 BB

Coffey had a break out season in 2023. He started the season a Greenville (A+) before he was sent to Portland on June 20. He was assigned to the Development List twice while at Portland to help keep his pitch/inning count down for the season.

  • Wyatt Olds (RHP), McLoud High School ’18/Oklahoma Sooners ’19-’21

2023 Stats: G 28; GS 12, 65.2 IP, 1-9, 7.54 ERA, 75 Ks 52 BB

Olds bounced from the FCL Red Sox (Rookie League) to Portland a couple of times. While his stats may not look so good, the Red Sox must think highly of his stuff to have him go from Rookie ball to AA (skipping A, A+). Olds is pitching for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League.

Greenville Drive (A+)

  • Jaret Godman (RHP), Oklahoma Sooners ’19-’22

2023 Stats: G 7, 0-1, 2 SV, 7.2 IP, 8.22 ERA, 7 Ks, 4 BB

Godman’s season was cut short with injury about a month into the season. He went on the IL on May 2 and didn’t return.

Salem Red Sox (A)

No Oklahomans were on the roster for the Salem Red Sox.

*Issac Stebens (RHP) Stillwater High School ’20/Oklahoma State ’23 was drafted and signed by the Red Sox in 2023, but did not pitch in 2023.

New York Yankees

Affiliates

  • AAA – Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders
  • AA – Somerset Patriots
  • High A (A+) – Hudson Valley Renegades
  • A – Tampa Tarpons

New York Yankees

  • Jose Trevino (C), Oral Roberts University ’12-’14

2023 Stats: G 55, .210/.257/.312, OPS .570, 4 HR, 15 RBI

Trevino was part of a pool system the Yankees used a Catcher this year. His season was cut short, however, as he went on the 60 day IL in late July.

Scranton/Wilke-Barre RailRiders (AAA)

There were no Oklahomans on the roster for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Somerset Patriots (AA)

  • Tyler Hardman (1B), Oklahoma Sooners ’18-’21

2023 Stats: G 77; .237/.332/.558, OPS .890; 26 HRs, 56 RBIs

It is safe to say that Hardman is one to watch for the Yankees. His propensity for the long ball (48 in 188 games the last 2 years) fits in historically with the Yankees. Hardman needs to cut down on the strikeouts – 110 in 77 games in 2023. Being a right handed first baseman in New York could lead him to bein a DH in the future. Hardman is the 17th top prospect for the Yankees according to MLB.com.

Hudson Valley Renegades (A+)

  • Spencer Hensen (1B), Pryor High School ’16/Oral Roberts ’17-’19

2023 Stats: G 82, .252/.357/.453, OPS .780, 14 HRs, 48 RBIs

Tampa Tarpons (A)

  • Roc Riggio (2B), Oklahoma State ’22-’23

2023 Stats: G 22, .192/.392/.219, OPS .611, 9 RBIs

Riggio was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2023 MLB Draft. The stats may not look great, but a) 22 games is a short sample size, and b) playing the same season as when you get drafted is more about getting used to the pro ball lifestyle. Riggio is the #18th top prospect for the Yankees according to MLB.com.

Tampa Bay Rays

Affiliates

  • AAA – Durham Bulls
  • AA – Montgomery Biscuits
  • High A (A+) – Bowling Green Hot Rods
  • A – Charleston RiverDogs

Tampa Bay Rays

There were no Oklahomans on Tampa Bay roster.

Durham Bulls (AAA)

There were no Oklahomans on the Durham roster.

Montgomery Biscuits (AA)

Ther wer no Oklahomans on the Montgomery roster.

Bowling Green Hot Rods (A+)

  • Blake Robertson (1B), Edmond Santa Fe HS ’19/Oklahoma Sooners ’22

2023 Stats: G 98, .278/.375/.424, OPS .799, 9 HRs, 42 RBIs

Robertson had a really solid year in his first full professional season. In an analytic centric organization like Tampa Bay, that slash line should stand out. If Robertson could develop a little more power, he’d be even more attractive.

Charleston RiverDogs (A)

  • Trevor Martin (RHP), Asher High School ’20/Oklahoma State ’21-’22

2023 Stats: G 25, GS 22, 110 IP, 10-5, 3.52, 131 Ks 41 BB

Martin had a really good year in his first full pro season. The 2022 3rd round pick is the Rays’ 17th best prospect according to MLB.com and at 6’5″, 238 lbs, Martin is the type of pitcher the Rays love. Next year will be big for Martin as MLB.com has him arriving in the bigs sometime in the 2025 season.

Toronto Blue Jays

Affiliates

  • AAA – Buffalo Bisons
  • AA – New Hampshire Fisher Cats
  • High A (A+) – Vancouver Canadians
  • A – Dunedin Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays

  • Jordan Romano (RHP), Connors State ’12-’13/ORU ’14

2023 Stats: G 59, 59 IP, 40 SV, 5-7, 2.90 ERA 72 Ks, 24 BB

Romano has emerged as one of the best closers in all of baseball the last 3 years. He has converted 95 of 106 save opportunities. He was named to the AL All Star teams in ’22 and ’23. Romano is arbitration eligible the next 2 season so he should see a bump in his salary.

And he’s got one of the best entrances into a game.

Buffalo Bisons (AAA)

There are no Oklahomans on the Buffalo Bisons roster.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (AA)

There are no Oklahomans on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats roster.

Vancouver Canadians (A+)

There are no Oklahomans on the Vancouver Canadians roster.

Dunedin Blue Jays (A)

  • Jace Bohrofen (OF), Westmoore High School ’20/Oklahoma Sooners ’21

2023 Stats: G 24, .299/.443/.636, OPS 1.079, 7 HR, 18 RBI

Yes, 24 games is a relatively short sample size, but what a start to Bohrofen’s pro career. The 2023 MLB Draft 6th round pick picked up where he left off for Arkansas in ’23. The Westmoore alum led the Hogs in hits, doubles, HRs, XBHs, and total bases.

He is already in the top 20 of the top prospect for the Blue Jays according to MLB.com.

*Juaron Watts-Brown (RHP), Oklahoma State ’23, was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays but did not see any action in 2023.
