For the 2023 Spring high school season, we had a little fun here at SSBR and did a weekly rankings of the high school teams across every class called the “SSBR High School Dominant Dozen.” This Fall we are going to keep that going, but with only 2 classes playing, we are going to trim down the rankings to just 6 – hence the “Super Six.”

We will be looking at records, strength of schedule, and how each team is playing relative to their level.

Please remember that this is for fun.

Teams Receiving Consideration

(In alphabetical order)

Dale (14-7), A; Okarche (18-3), A; Preston (21-2), A; Stuart (15-4), B; Wister Wildcats (17-4), A

Dropped Out of Rankings

  • Okarche Warriors (Prev #6) – It may seem harsh to drop the Warriors out of the rankings after a single loss to Dale in extra innings and after winning a tournament, but comparing their resume/strength of schedule to others they come up a little short. They are still a major player to make it to the Class A state tournament.
  • Wister Wildcats (Prev #6) – Being “harsh” in Wister dropping out of the rankings can also be said here. However, looking at the Wildcats’ resume, they only have 1 “signature” win (Rattan 9-4 on 8/17) while others have at least two. Plus the #6 team this week just beat them this weekend.

Speaking of the #6 team…

#6 Wright City Lumberjax (19-6), A

Prev: N/R

The Lumberjax make their debut to the Super Six this week. They’ve been in the “Teams Receiving Consideration” group for most of the season, but after a 4-1 week with a win over Wister earns them a spot in the Super Six this week.

Yes, Wright City, has the most losses of any of the Super Six teams and more than Okarche, Preston, and Wister. But when you look at the schedule they’ve played, the strength of that schedule makes up for it. Their losses are to #1 Oktaha, and top ten teams Rattan (2x), Tushka, and Dale as well as top 20 Arapaho-Butler. Their wins include victories over top ten teams Silo (2x), Tushka, and Wister this past weekend. The Jax also own wins over Class B top 5 teams Stuart and caney.

This week: 9/18 at Battiest; Districts vs Bennington & Red Oak

5. Ft Cobb-Broxton (22-4), B

Prev: #4

Weather kept us from having the only regular season matchup between the top 2 teams in Class B this past week. Tuesday’s game between FCB and Calumet was cancelled because of rain.

The Mustangs didn’t play this past week until Friday when they played Class A’s Dale and beat them 3-0.

FCB then travelled to Latta to play a three way with the Panthers and the Red Oak Eagles. After beating Latta, the Mustangs were upset by the Eagles, 8-7.

While losing to Red Oak was a shocker, FCB had just won 10 games in a row with a Hydro-Eakly Labor Day Tournament championship and wins over the aforementioned Dale, Navajo, AmPo (2x), and Sterling (2x) – all Class A state tournament contenders.

This week: Districts vs Chattanooga and Erick

4. Silo Rebels (16-5), A

Prev: N/R

Silo is the 2nd team to come from the “not ranked” teams to enter the Super Six this week. It is also the 3rd time the Rebels have entered the rankings this season.

After losing a close game to Oktaha in their tournament’s semifinals and getting ruled by Wright City in the 3rd place game, the Rebels traveled to Oktaha on Monday and handed the Tigers their first loss on the season.

Silo then ran off 5 more wins on the week to make it 6 wins in a row.

Another thing to keep an eye on for Silo is the return of Charlie Gardner to the mound. He was expected to be the “ace” of the staff this season, but had been out with an arm injury. Gardner returned to the mound this week and in his start on Saturday he threw 4 innings of no hit ball with 10 strike outs.

This week: 9/18 vs Tupelo; Districts vs Colber & Vanoss

3. Rattan Rams (19-4), A

Rattan went 4-0 this week including winning their Rattan Fall Classic. They’ve won 10 games in a row including wins over Ft Cobb-Broxton, Tupelo (2x), and Wright City (2x).

This week: 9/18 vs Caney; 9/19 vs Calera; District vs Crowder & Haworth

2. Calumet Chieftons (21-1), B

As we said earlier, weather kept the huge matchup with Ft Cobb-Broxton from happening. Otherwise Calumet went 3-0 winning the Hammon Tournament last weekend outscoring their opponents (Lomega, Hammon, and Canute) 37-0.

Looks like the only way we’ll see a Calument vs FCB matchup will be in the state tournament finals.

This week: 9/18 at Sentinel; Districts vs Carney & Dover

1. Oktaha Tigers (23-1), A

Welp, it happened. Oktaha lost a game. As we said earlier, Silo went into Oktaha on Monday and beat the Tigers 8-4. The undefeated season may be gone, but the state title goal isn’t and Oktaha should still be considered the favorite to win the Class A title.

Byng did give Oktaha a game on Friday taking them to 9 innings.

One thing to keep an eye on for the Tigers is one of their best players who has been out of action this season, Dylan Walden, came back into the lineup this week. That makes the state’s most talented lineup that much tougher.

This week: 9/18 vs Dale; Districts vs Cameron & Okay
