For the 2023 Spring high school season, we had a little fun here at SSBR and did a weekly rankings of the high school teams across every class called the “SSBR High School Dominant Dozen.” This Fall we are going to keep that going, but with only 2 classes playing, we are going to trim down the rankings to just 6 – hence the “Super Six.”

We will be looking at records, strength of schedule, and how each team is playing relative to their level. For this initial set of rankings, we will also use the rankings that coaches sent in with their preseason info as part of our process.

Please remember that this is for fun.

Teams Receiving Consideration

(In alphabetical order)

AmPo (10-3), A; Dale (7-3), A; Ft Cobb-Broxton (11-3), B; Rattan (10-4), A; Stuart (11-0), B; Wister (8-2), A

Teams Dropped Out of Rankings

  • Dale (Prev #2) – went 2-2 last week losing to #6 Preston and #1 Oktaha
  • Ft Cobb-Broxton (Prev #3) – went 4-2 last week losing to Tushka and Rattan
  • Wister (Prev #4) – went 1-1 losing to Silo

It may seem harsh to drop all 3 of these teams from the rankings considering whom they lost. However, both Dale and FCB lost twice while Wister only had 1 win. Also, the rankings this week reflect more about what the newcomers did than what the teams that dropped out of the rankings didn’t.

6. Silo Rebels (8-3), A

Prev: NR

Silo is the first team to drop from the rankings then come back into the rankings this season. They are also the first team to move up in the rankings while incurring a loss during the week.

The Rebels are young and have been playing without some of their veterans. They got those veterans back this week and beat previous SSBR #4 Wister on Tuesday.

Silo then traveled to Missouri to take on some of the best teams in Missouri. They lost to the defending Class 3 Missouri state champ, Licking, in their first game of the trip but beat their next 3 opponents by a combined score of 38-6.

This week: 8/28 vs Rattan; 9/1 at Vanoss; 9/2 vs Roff

5. Tushka Tigers (8-2), A

Prev: NR

Tushka started the season 2-2, but has since won 6 in a row. This past week the Tigers went 4-0 and won a loaded Roff Tournament. Those 4 wins this week all came against OSSAA ranked teams: Wright City (A #7), Byng (A #9), FCB (B #1), and Latta (A #13).

This week: 8/29 at Calera; 8/31 vs Colbert; 9/1 at #1 Oktaha

4. Calumet Chieftans (11-0), B

Prev: NR

If you listened to the Fall Preview podcast and last week’s podcast, I said that Calumet was a team to watch and could contend in Class B this Fall. The reason why they weren’t ranked yet was they had played only 6 games through the first 2 weeks and the competition wasn’t all that great.

That changed this week as the Chieftans went 5-0 and won the Okarche/AmPo Invitational. In that tournament, Calumet beat Class A #10 Okarche in the semis and Class A #5 AmPo in the finals.

Nine of the Chieftans eleven wins this year have come against Class A competition.

They host the Calument Festival on Monday and Tuesday.

This week: 8/28 vs Leedey; 8/29 vs Drummond; 9/1 vs Granite & Okarche

3. Preston Pirates (11-0), A

Prev: #6

It’s safe to say that Preston’s biggest game of the season (so far) was this past Thursday at Dale. In the “Battle of Pirates,” Preston won a back and forth game in extra innings 9-6.

Preston hosts a tournament Thursday and Friday with a potential showdown against fellow undefeated, Stuart looming in the finals.

This week: 8/29 vs Latta; 8/31-9/1 hosting Preston Tournament

2. Tupelo Tigers (10-2), B

Prev: #5

Tupelo followed up a big previous week with 3 dominant performances this week. The Tigers beat 2 Class B ranked teams and a Class A team by a combined score of 32-2.

This week: 8/28 at Varnum; 8/29 at Byng; 9/1 vs Rock Creek

1. Oktaha Tigers (13-0), A

Prev: #1

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Oktaha exemplifies the “stay the same” part of that adage. While other teams were losing behind them and new teams were making their cases to be a top level team, Oktaha just kept on being themselves as they went 4-0 last week.

Oktaha outscored their opponents 38-7 including their 2nd win at Dale this year. The 2nd edition of Oktaha/Dale wasn’t as close as the 1st one at Oktaha won 8-3.

Oktaha is scheduled for only 2 games this week, but they are good one.

This week: 8/29 vs Wister; 9/1 vs Tushka (SSBR # 5)
