While there are other tournaments this weekend and throughout the season, it is same to say that one of the best tournament fields will be at Roff High School starting Thursday.

The 44th Annual Roff Baseball Tournament starts on Thursday and it is a good one.

Seven of the eight teams in the tournament are ranked in their respective classes in the first OSSAA Rankings of the season. They are led by Ft Cobb-Broxton who it #1 in Class B and Rattan who is #4 in Class A. So it is safe to say that whichever team wins this tournament will have won one of the best in the state this season.

Team Capsules

  • Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (10-1), B #1: Quality wins: Okarche (A, #10), AmPo (A, #5), Latta (A, #13), Sterling (A, #14), Sentinel (A, #17)
  • Moss Pirates (4-5), B: Quality wins: Varnum (A, #20)
  • Byng Pirates (7-4), A #9: Quality wins: Calera (A, #15), Latta (A, #13)
  • Tushka Tigers (5-2), A #12: Quality wins: Latta (A, #13), Wright City (A, #7)
  • Roff Tigers (1-8), B #16: Quality wins: Asher (B, #14)
  • Rattan Rams (8-3), A #4: Quality wins: Tushka (A, #12), AmPo (A, #5)
  • Latta Panthers (4-5), A #13: Quality wins: Tushka (A, #12)
  • Calera Bulldogs (5-2), A #15: Quality wins: Tupelo (B, #2), Navajo (A, #11), Boswell (B, #14)

Bracket

Breaking Down the Bracket

Looking at the bracket initially, the top teams (Ft Cobb & Rattan) are kept away from each other and will play in the championship if they get that far. Not only that, the 2 teams that are struggling the most this year (Moss and Roff) are playing them in the first round. The remaining 4 teams are really bunched together. It appears the tournament organizers “seeded” the tournament. I don’t know if that was done intentionally, but it is a nice change.

Top Half of Bracket

Ft Cobb-Broxton is one of the top 3 teams in the state regardless of class. Their only loss was a 1 run affair to Dale at the Dale Tournament.

Both Tushka and Byng are coming into the tournament as hot teams. Tushka has won their last 3 games: Boswell, Latta, and Wright City, while Byng has won back to back games against Calera and Latta.

Bottom Half of Bracket

Rattan may have an 8-3 record, but they are still ranked #4 for a reason. Their 3 losses are to Oktaha (A, #1 OSSAA; #1 SSBR Super Six), Wister (A, #3 OSSAA; #4 SSBR Super Six), and AmPo (A, #5 OSSAA). They did avenge the loss to AmPo the next day, however.

Latta and Calera should be a good game. I feel Latta’s record doesn’t show how good they are or could be. They lost to Class B #1 Ft Cobb-Broxton in 11 innings, and the other 4 losses all came to teams in Class A that are ranked higher than them. Only the game vs Oktaha wasn’t in doubt while the Panthers had close games to Dale, Tushka, and Byng.

Still not going to predict who is winning the tournament since it is high school, but it’s hard to not imagine it’ll be FCB and Rattan in the finals. That 3rd place game should be a good one as well.
