For the 2023 Spring high school season, we had a little fun here at SSBR and did a weekly rankings of the high school teams across every class called the “SSBR High School Dominant Dozen.” This Fall we are going to keep that going, but with only 2 classes playing, we are going to trim down the rankings to just 6 – hence the “Super Six.”
We will be looking at records, strength of schedule, and how each team is playing relative to their level. For this initial set of rankings, we will also use the rankings that coaches sent in with their preseason info as part of our process.
Please remember that this is for fun.
Teams Receiving Consideration
AmPo (8-2), A; Calumet (6-0), B; Rattan (7-3), A; Sentinel (5-1), A; Silo (4-2), A; Sterling (5-1); Stuart (8-0), B; Wright City (5-1), A
6. Preston Pirates (9-0), A
Last week: NR
Evaluating the Preston Pirates at this point is not an easy task. On the one hand, they really haven’t played that difficult of a schedule. One of their wins was over a JV team while the other 8 teams have a combined record under .500. On the other hand, they’ve done exactly what they’re supposed to do and won those games by a combined score of 112-7. They also won the Chad Speer Classic the first weekend of the season.
Schedule definitely gets tougher in the next couple of weeks with a game at Dale this week and a game at home vs Latta next week.
This week: 8/22 vs New Lima; 8/24 at Dale; 8/25 vs Braggs
5. Tupelo Tigers (7-2), B
Last week: NR
Tupelo jumps up from the unranked to the ranked after winning their own Tupelo Tournament. What made it even more impressive is they beat traditional power, Silo, in the finals.
The Tigers also beat good teams in Kiowa, and Calera this week. They did lose to #2 Dale, however.
All 3 of Tupelo’s games are on the road this week.
This week: 8/22 at Asher; 8/25 at Stonewall; 8/26 at Red Oak
4. Wister Wildcats (7-1), A
LAST WEEK: #5
It’s not often you see a team lose a game during the week and still move up in the rankings. However, when that team you lose to is the #1 team, and you beat the #3 team at the time, it’s understandable.
The Wildcats beat Rattan in a game that wasn’t in doubt after the 4th inning. After being tied, the Wildcats went on to win 9-4.
This week: 8/21 at Howe; 8/24 vs Rattan
3. Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (7-1), B
LAST WEEK: #4
Another week of just moving along for the Mustangs. They handed both Sentinel and Sterling their first losses of the season. Then the Mustangs swept Roff and Canute on Saturday. They outscored those 4 teams 47-6.
This week: 8/21 vs Verden & Lookeba-Sickles; 8/22 vs Lomega; 824-26 at Roff Tournament
2. Dale Pirates (2-1), A
LAST WEEK: #2
The Pirates seemed to have found a grove this week. They beat #5 Tupelo on the road on Tuesady then another good team in Latta at home on Thursday. They finished the week run ruling Arapaho-Butler on Friday.
Dale has a big week coming up as they host #6 Preston on Thursday and play #1 Oktaha (again) at UCO on Saturday.
This week: 8/21 vs Hydro-Eakly; 8/24 vs Preston; 8/26 vs Varnum & Oktaha (at UCO)
1. Oktaha Tigers (4-0), A
LAST WEEK: #1
Last week I said Oktaha had the most impressive opening week of any team in the state. Well, they just had the most impressive week of any team in the state for the 2nd week as well.
Oktaha had to face the #3 team in Rattan and the #5 team in Wister at the EOSC Festival on Thursday and Friay. On Thursday, after giving up a run in both the 6th and 7th innings to Rattan to tie it, Oktaha calmly loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th before they walked it off with a hit. On Friday, after giving up an early 2 runs to Wister, the Tigers won a 9-4 game.
This week: 8/21 at Crowder; 8/22 vs Howe & Leflore; 8/24 vs Red Oak; 8/26 vs Varnum & Dale (at UCO)
