For the 2023 Spring high school season, we had a little fun here at SSBR and did a weekly rankings of the high school teams across every class called the “SSBR High School Dominant Dozen.” This Fall we are going to keep that going, but with only 2 classes playing, we are going to trim down the rankings to just 6 – hence the “Super Six.”
We will be looking at records, strength of schedule, and how each team is playing relative to their level. For this initial set of rankings, we will also use the rankings that coaches sent in with their preseason info as part of our process.
Please remember that this is for fun.
Teams Receiving Consideration
AmPo (4-2), A; Calera (2-0), A; Granite (3-1), B; Kiowa (2-0), B; Preston (6-0), A; Tupelo (3-1), B; Union City (4-0), A; Wright City (2-1), A
6. Silo Rebels (1-1), A
It was a little surprising to see the Rebels lose their opening game at home in what was Eddie Jeffcoat’s first game as Silo head coach, but it was to Wright City who is usually a good team. The Rebels bounced back with with a win over Rock Creek.
To be fair, the preseason info from the coaches have a lot to do with this ranking. Almost all of them had Silo in their top 5 with a few 1st place votes.
This week: 8/14 at Haworth; 8/17-8/19 at Tupelo Tournament
5. Wister Wildcats (4-0), A
Wister is a team that could be under the radar. They were on a couple of coach’s preseason top 5’s lists.
The Wildcats went 4-0 this week and won the Mark Pollard (at CASC) Tournament. Wister outscored their opponents 38-1 in those 4 games.
This week: 8/14 at Crowder
4. Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (3-1), B
The Mustangs may already be the most battle tested team in the state. They went 3-1 last week, but their 3 wins were by a combined 4 runs and the game they lost was by only 2 to Dale in the Dale Invitational. FCB also had a 13 inning game and an 11 inning game.
This week: 8/15 vs Sterling; 8/17 at Sentinel; 8/18 vs Canute & Roff
3. Rattan Rams (5-1), A
Honestly, Rattan is at #3 most likely because of when they lost their game. It came in the first round of the Dale Invitational to a good Amber-Pocasset team by a score of 3-2. What did the Rams do after that? They won their next 3 games by a combined scored of 36-4. That includes a 7-1 win over the same AmPo team they lost to just 2 days prior.
This week: 8/15 vs Battiest: 8/17-8/19 at EOSC Tournament
2. Dale Pirates (2-1), A
I got to see Dale in person this weekend and they are a solid team. They have a bunch of ball players who are going to make you beat them because they are not going to beat themselves. You can tell Jimmy Harris is in the beginning stages of building the program the way he likes it and I think it is going to work out for the Pirates.
The Pirates only played games in their own tournament. They beat the #4 team Ft Cobb-Broxton in the semis before losing to Oktaha in extra innings in the finals.
Dayton Forsythe is more than just a basketball player. He’s a great athlete who has sneaky power which was evidenced by his oppo taco shot in the finals.
This week: 8/15 at Tupelo; 8/17 vs Latta; 8/18 at Arapaho-Butler
1. Oktaha Tigers (4-0), A
The Tigers had the most impressive opening week out of any team in the state. They started off by beating Wright City 11-1 (the same Wright City who beat Silo). Then they went 3-0 in the Dale Invitational beating Byng 12-2, Latta 11-1, and Dale 10-6 in extras in the finals.
The Tigers have a deep lineup where there is no breaks. Their 8 hole hit a nuke to straight away center field and their 9 hole went 1-3 with an RBI and walk.
Oktaha definitely passed the “eye test” and is definitely a state title contender (at least through the first week anyway).
This week: 8/15 vs Leflore & Okay; 8/17-8/19 at EOSC Tournament
