As we’ve stated time and time again here at SSBR, there is some great baseball played in the Sooner State. More evidence of that came today as the NAIA announced it’s 2023 All Americans and three players from Oklahoma squads garnered All American honors.
Eli Davis, Sr, LHP, Oklahoma City University
1st Team; National Pitcher of the Year
The Shawnee High School alum was not only named to the 1st team, he was named the National Pitcher of the Year. Davis finished with a record of 12-2 (leading the nation in wins). He was second in the nation in starts at 16 and lead the nation in innings pitched at 103.1. Davis had an ERA of 1.83 and hitters only batted .196 against him.
Davis also saved his best performance(s) for the NAIA national tournament. In OCU’s opening game against Doane, Davis threw a complete game allowing only 4 hits and 1 earned run with 12 Ks against 3 BB on 135 total pitches. It was just 2 days later in an elimination game against Doane, that his number was called once again in the bottom of the 9th. With the Stars up 8-6, Davis got the final out on a strike out to move OCU into the finals of the Opening Round.
Jhors Gomez, So, 2B, Southwestern Christian University
1st Team
Jhors Gomez joins fellow SAC member, Davis, on the 1st team. The second baseman was a menace for other teams while he was at the plate. Gomez batted .498 (.601 OBP!) with 18 HRs, 85 RBIs, 21 2B, and 8 3B. All of this came in just 59 games.
In the NCCAA National Tournament, Gomez batted .400 with a HR, 7 RBIs, and 2 2B in the 6 games for the Eagles.
Peyton McDowall, Sr, 3B, USAO
Honorable Mention
Peyton McDowall had a monster season manning the hot corner for the Drovers. He batted .399 with 15 HRs and 75 RBIs. McDowall also added 17 2B and 3 3B.
McDowall had his best games during conference play. In 24 SAC games, McDowall batted .470 with 6 HRs and 40 RBIs.
