While there are several high school baseball tournaments each week around the state, there are a few that have rich histories where they are held in a high regard. One of those tournaments is this week – the Bill Tipton Classic.

Hosted by Carl Albert High School, the tournament is in it’s 21st season. It has grown to a whopping 16 teams and is played at 3 different sites (Carl Albert, Shawnee HS, Midwest City HS).

The format is a 3 plus 1. Teams will play 3 scheduled games between Thursday and Friday then a placement game on Saturday which is dependent on how the teams did on Thursday and Friday.

Teams from all across the state are coming in this weekend and included teams from 2A all the way up to 6A.

Notable Matchups

#3 Elgin Owls (4A) vs #13 Stillwater Pioneers (6A); Thurs, 11:00 a.m.

A game between 2 SSBR ranked teams? Yes please.

Elgin is one of, if not the top favorites in Class 4A at this point in the season. The Owls gave Newcastle their only loss of the season and are coming off a District sweep of Community Christian this week.

Stillwater has emerged as a state championship contender in the wide open 6A. Included in their 14 wins so far is a sweep of Owasso in District play along with a win on Tuesday over #9 Jenks in District play (they split the series with the Trojans).

Noble Bears (5A) vs Dale Pirates (2A-1); Thurs, 4:00 p.m.

Noble may have a record of 12-9 so far, but they are still a state tournament contender in 5A. The Bears did have a 5 game winning streak snapped by Guthrie in game 2 of their District series on Tuesday.

Dale comes in as the top ranked team in the 2A-1 OSSAA poll. The Pirates have wins over Deer Creek (6A) and 5A squads McGuinness and McAlester.

Carl Albert Titans (5A) vs Stillwater Pioneers (6A); Fri, 5:30 p.m.

Carl Albert may not be having a dominating season that we were used to seeing the last several years, but the Titans are a contender in 5A. They are currently at 16-4 on the season one of only 4, 5A teams still undefeated in District play.
