The calendar has turned to March and that means the OSSAA baseball season is now in full swing.

All of the classifications are now open to start their seasons this week and that means we have an almost full slate of games this week.

One of the things we like to do at SSBR is highlight 5 games during the week that we think should have a special “focus” on them. They could be matchups of top teams in the same class, rivalries, or even teams that may not get the coverage other programs do.

There are a couple of caveats that we have regarding what games are “eligible” to be selected.

  • They cannot be a District series game.
  • They cannot be part of a festival or scheduled tournament game that we may be covering during the week.

Without further ado, here are the SSBR Games of the Week for Week 5.

*Rankings are SSBR Sweet Sixteen.

Caddo Bruins (A-1) vs Colbert Leopards (2A-1)
Monday, March 30, 4:00 p.m.

This will be the 3rd time this season that Colbert is featured in an SSBR Game of the Week which is a testament to the Leopards’ scheduling. It is also a testament to the season Colbert is having up to this point with a 14-2 record. They are 1-1 in their previous SSBR GOTW games with a 2-1 loss at Tushka and an 8-6 win at Wright City last week.

For Caddo, they are having an outstanding season in their own right up to this point. They are 9-2 and ranked at #5 in the OSSAA Coaches poll last week. They have a win over the same Tushka squad that beat Colbert with their 2 losses to Arapaho-Butler and Calera.

Calumet Chieftains (B) vs Union City Tigers (A-2)
Tuesday, March 31, 4:30 p.m.

It’s the 2nd time for Calumet to be a Game of the Week and the 2nd week in a row. The Chieftains lost to Okarche last week in the GOTW. For the season, Calumet is 4-2 with their losses to Okarche and Tuttle. The coaches have the Chieftains tabbed as the top team in Class B.

For their part, Union City is having one of their best seasons in a while up to this point. The Tigers are 12-1 including wins over Leedey and Pioneer-Pleasant Vale (which is the Mustangs’ only loss). Union City was tabbed at the 4th best team in the coaches’ poll last week in Class A-2.

Heritage Hall Chargers (4A) vs #5 Tuttle Tigers (4A)
Thursday, April 2, 5:00 p.m.

Heritage Hall comes into the week with a record of 7-3. They started the year with impressive wins over Chickasha and Piedmont and come into this week with another impressive win over Victory Christian.

In a scheduling anomaly, this will be the Chargers’ 2nd game of the week although it is on Thursday as they don’t play a District series this week. The Hall may be able to use one of their District starters in a Thursday game when they usually don’t get to.

For Tuttle, the Tigers come into the game at 15-1 and ranked #5 in the latest SSBR Sweet Sixteen. They come into the week winning their last 2 games vs Calumet and Okarche.

Stigler Panthers (3A) vs #11 Sallisaw Black Diamonds (4A)
Friday, April 3, 5:00 p.m.

Sallisaw is coming into this week riding the longest winning streak in the state. They went 4-0 in the Tiger/Zebra Classic last week with wins over Oktaha, Skiatook, Lincoln Christian, and then SSBR #13 Claremore. The Black Diamonds have a series vs Eufaula on Monday and Tuesday so there is a good chance they will be 16-0 when they travel to Stigler.

For Stigler, they come into the week at 9-1. They have 4 District games against 2 teams below them in the standings earlier in the week before this game, so there is a good chance they come into this game at 13-1.

#9 Jenks Trojans (6A) vs Edmond North Huskies (6A)
Saturday, April 4, Noon

Jenks comes into the week at 11-2 and undefeated in District play. It is a big week for the Trojans as they have a huge District series with fellow District undefeated Broken Arrow to start the week.

Edmond North comes into this week at 10-5, but 3 of those losses are to teams from outside the state of Oklahoma. The Huskies are a team that made a surprise run to the state tournament last season, but they are already outperforming where they were at this time last year.

This game will be a good barometer for both teams as they head into the 2nd half of the season.
