The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.
Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.
What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.
Today’s team: Oklahoma Union Cougars
Classification: 2A-2
2025 Spring Results: 19-11 (State Quarterfinalist)
Head Coach: Logan Bernard
Head coaching experience: 1st year
Top Returners
- Wyatt Maxey– He is 1 of 2 kids with pitching experience from last year’s team, I will look forward to him having a bigger role as he rolls into an everyday starter.
- Ty Almy– He is a returning starter from last year’s state tournament team, I look forward to him having a bigger role this year as we move into the new year.
- Connor Gagan– He along with Maxey are the two with pitching experience from last year, and I look forward for him to move into a bigger roll this year.
Top Newcomers
- Cooper Hill– He is a freshman who is stepping into a big roll as he will help anchor down a rebuilding pitching staff along with stepping up to fill a spot on a team that lost 8 started from last years State Tournament Team.
Overall Team Strengths
This year’s strength will be their ability to adapt and their willingness to learn and work on the basics.
Overall Team Needs to Work On
This years needs work will be that they are young and will need to learn how to play together as we are replacing 8 starters.
Outlook
I think even though this is a rebuilding year we can still go out and win games this year.
