The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.

Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.

What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.

Today’s team: Coalgate Wildcats

Classification: 2A-1

2025 Spring Results: 13-16

Head Coach: David Cagle

Head coaching experience: 7 years (3 at Coalgate)

Top Returners

  • Jett Walkup– Soph. OF/P; Walkup is the kind of player that rarely takes a day off. He wants to get better everyday to be the best he can be and, he has a great work ethic. There is not very many times I do not see him putting in extra work after practice or on the weekends. Whether it’s working on pitching mechanics our working on his swing he is constantly doing extra to be better in both areas. We expect him to be one of the top guys on the mound and at the plate.
  • Easton Loudermilk– Soph. INF/P; Easton also had a good year last year he was the leader in a lot of categories on the offensive side as a freshman. He is also a big part of the defensive side as well for us. He is a hard working player and we expect him to be have a better year this year.
  • Jett Burris– Sr. 1B; Jett is the only Sr. returner for us this year. We expect him to help our offensive side more this year and, to continue to be a vital player of the defensive side as well. He is a smart kid that knows the game and, we expect that help him improve his game this year.
  • Jase Burris– Jr. Utility; Jase is one of our players who consistently puts in extra work when we don’t have practice. He had and ok season last year but he wants to be a lot better this year. He has a great work ethic as well. He was one of our top guys on the mound last year and has been working hard to improve in that area to be better than last year. He expects a lot out of himself and so do we.

Top Newcomers

  • Weston Lackey– Fr. INF/P; Weston is one of the players that has a chance to see some playing time on the mound and in the field. He has to learn how to play the game at a faster pace and improve his fundamentals.
  • Brooks Hale– Fr. OF/P; Brooks is also a player who could have a chance to see some time on the mound and field this year. He has improved a lot this offseason which will help him when season starts. He is very coachable and will try to do his best when asked.
  • Levi Beard– Fr. C/INF; Levi has a chance to split some time behind the plate this year and play in the infield. He knows the game and we expect him to compete for a position.

Overall Team Strengths

Pitching and gaining a lot of experience last year with our younger players.

Overall Team Needs to Work On

We need to be better defensively in situations and being more consistent at the plate.

Outlook

This team is capable to compete against whoever we play but, we have to better with our fundamentals and understanding situations better. We are still a young team with most of our players being freshman through juniors. If we can be more consistent and healthy this year that will help us compete at a high level. We still have a lot to learn and a lot of areas to grow and improve in.
