The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.

Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.

What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.

Today’s team: Tonkawa Buccaneers

Classification: 2A-2

2025 Spring Results: 20-9

Head Coach: Bobby Shoate

Head coaching experience: 6 seasons (2 at Tonkawa)

Top Returners

  • Cayden Duvall (NOC Tonkawa) – Could be a top arm for us, will play CF most games and a big weapon at the plate.
  • Westyn Freeman – A really good arm and holds down the SS position for us when he’s not on the mound. He’s our tone setter offensively hitting in the leadoff spot.
  • Barrick Wano is our field general behind the plate. He does a really good job managing the game and is a tremendous receiver of the ball.
  • We have a senior heavy class. Brett Shepherd, Conner DeWitt, and Brody Reed deserve some recognition for what they’ve done the past few years as well. This senior class is special.

Top Newcomers

  • Zaden Frederick – Could be a dominant arm on the mound and will probably play 3B most days. Should fit into the middle of our lineup and add another weapon for us offensively.
  • Cason Johnson and Loudyn Alexander – They aren’t really newcomers but their roles will be greatly expanded for us this year in all aspects of the game.

Overall Team Strengths

Togetherness – these guys have been playing together for a long time. If they can continue to celebrate each other’s successes and continue to grow as a team we’ll have a good year. “Tonkawa” in the native language is Tickanwa·Tic which means, “We stand together.” That is something we’ll push.

Overall Team Needs to Work On

If we can consistently throw strikes on the mound we could be pretty dangerous. We have some potentially dominant arms mixed with some young pups who can help when we need them.

Outlook

If we play to our potential and do the little things right consistently we have the athletic ability to make the state tournament. It’s all about playing well everyday, competing hard everyday, and staying TOGETHER.
