The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.

Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.

What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.

Today’s team: Sapulpa Chieftains

Classification: 6A

2025 Spring Results: 18-17

Head Coach: Steven Irvine, Jr

Head coaching experience: 13th season (10th at Sapulpa)

Top Returners

  • Brysen Donnell 2026 OF (Carl Albert State College) leading hitter from 2025, looking to be an offensive catalyst at the top of the lineup.
  • Tyler Sparks 2027 P/UTIL Switch-hitter, becomes a 3-year starter for us. Led majority of pitching categories in 2025 as a district starter. Tyler is a plug-and-play all over the field defensively.
  • Ryan Angell 2027 IF/P Ryan is a legitimate 5-tool player and can affect the game in a variety of ways. Strong defender at 3rd and SS, will look to be a steady offensive player and now fully healthy, has high upside on the mound as well.
  • Jensen Penn 2027 LHP Jensen returns for his Junior year after throwing district games in both 2024 and 2025. He’s added velocity to go into this Spring and we look for another strong season on the mound from him.
  • Marvin Osaba 2027 3B/1B Marvin is a strong presence in the batters box and looks to expand his role and be a run producer in the middle of the order
  • Logan Mason 2027 LHP/1B Logan is a big left handed pitcher that started 7 games on the mound in 2025. We look for him to push for some early week innings on the mound and continue to develop his offensive output.

Top Newcomers

  • Brayden Andrews 2028 IF/P Brayden is a switch-hitting Sophomore with high level skills defensively. Will play in the middle of the field. Getting his first taste of varsity action he will grow offensively into an impact bat.
  • Brock Copass 2027 C Brock transferred to us with tons of experience behind the plate. Another strong hitter capable of driving in runs from the middle of the order.
  • Jaycob Goodman 2029 LHP Jaycob is a hard-throwing Freshman that is pushing his way into the rotation. A mid 80’s fastball allows him to pitch to both sides of the plate and really attack hitters early.

Overall Team Strengths

We return all 35 pitching starts from 2025 so experience on the mound and depth on the mound is a real strength of ours this year. We also have a deep crop of athletes defensively with a ton of positional flexibility.

Overall Team Needs to Work On

We have worked to be better offensively this year, looking to limit strikeouts and wasted at bats.

Outlook

I expect to have some early growing pains while we sort out some rotational players and best lineups. I am a believer in the talent on this roster and expect our players to play hard and compete at a high level.
