The calendar has turned to the a new year and that means the OSSAA high school baseball season will be here soon. Classes A1, A2, and B officially get started February 23 while the rest of the classes begin March 2.

Up until that the beginning of the season, SSBR will be providing previews of as many teams as we can. Recently, SSBR sent out questionnaires to the high school coaches across the state of Oklahoma asking for their top returning players, top newcomers, overall strengths/weaknesses, and their overall assessment where their respective programs are coming into the 2026 season.

What you have below are the responses to those questions in the words of the coaches themselves.

Today’s team: Wetumka Chieftains

Classification: A-2

2025 Spring Results: 8-16

Head Coach: Isaac Bellinger

Head coaching experience: 3 years (all at Wetumka)

Top Returners

  • Sr Phillip Ross. He’s our one on the hill coming off of upsetting Turpin in the Navajo Regional last spring. When he’s locating and mixing speeds we feel good about our chances with the best of them. He was 3-2 on the hill last year with a couple of no decisions. He also was 2nd on the team in total batting average for us last season hitting .378.
  • We are also bringing back Patrick Hebert who was huge for us on the hill last season as well. He was 3-3 with a couple of no decisions as well. He’s just a sophomore so a ton of upside and potential for him and we’re super excited to see how these two pair together for us this year.

Including Phil we bring back 4 guys from last season who hit +.300.

  • Jr. 3B Dwayne Lowe hit .340 last season.
  • Jr. SS Chayden Flanagan hit .322
  • Sr. LF Joshua Lee hit .310

Returning these guys and having them in the heart of our order we feel gives us a pretty good chance to score quite a few runs.

Top Newcomers

  • We didn’t have any move ins but we have added some freshman. I feel confident in them. We will get some help on the mound from Bentley Clanton and Briar Robbins, some corner and catcher work form Spencer Heneha and a boost behind the dish from Rylie Thomas.
  • One change that you may see more of is the inclusion of Chayden Flanagan in our pitching rotation more often. He has had a really good offseason of work on the hill and he’s working his tail off to help us out in that area.

Overall Team Strengths

We are returning our entire infield from last year.
3B Jr Dwayne Lowe
SS Jr Chayden Flanagan
2B So Creed Neese
1B Sr Phillip Ross

We feel pretty good in this area. All of these guys have a full year of experience at their positions under their belts. We worked through some growing pains last year but I feel like we’re better off now for it.

Overall Team Needs to Work On

We need to be better on the hill from a consistency standpoint. Saw flashes of it in the back half of last spring, but we can’t afford to wait around this season. We need to be good from the jump locating well and mixing speeds.

Outlook

We want to get to a regional final this spring with a chance of playing for a state tournament spot. We were a game away from that position last spring. We felt like we left a lot on the table last year in the regular season and doing so caught up with us in the post season. We want to focus on taking care of business in the regular season this year to help us in the postseason.
