SSBR Games of the Week is now sponsored by Chris Cameron, Lippard Real Estate & Auctions. You can check him out at facebook.com/CCameronAuctions/.

Last week when communicating to a head coach, the phrase “what a mess this week has been” was used when referencing the weather. Several games were postponed or cancelled due to rain.

We roll into week 4 of the OSSAA fall season this week and it is crazy to believe that at the end of this week, the regular season will be more than half over.

We’ve got a good lineup of games this week and we’ve got five Games of the Week that we think will be good ones.

  • SSBR #2 Okarche is in 2 games this week as they continue their gauntlet of a schedule.
  • The other 3 games are intraclass matchups.

*Home teams are listed first

All rankings are from the latest SSBR Elite Eight

#2 Okarche Warriors (A, 12-1) vs Calumet Chieftains (B, 7-3), Tuesday, September 1

Fresh off winning the Roff Tournament including beating #3 Byng in the championship, Okarche continues their incredibly tough schedule with a game against top Class B team, Calumet.

The Chieftains were in our SSBR Elite Eight last week, but after a 1-2 record in Roff, they dropped out. Despite last week, Calumet is still one of the elite teams in Class B as their 3 losses all came to 2A schools – 2 of which are currently in the SSBR Elite Eight,

Hammon Warriors (B, 7-3) vs #6 Leedey Bison (B, 11-2), Tuesday, September 1

Leedey comes into this week after entering the SSBR Elite Eight at #6. The Bison look like a team to beat in Class B as they’ve dominated the other Class B teams they’ve played. They are also the 2 of the 3 losses Class A contender, Arapaho-Butler, has had. The only blemish for the Bison in the past 7 games is a loss to Dale. The Bison are in the final four of the H-E Labor Day Tournament on Monday.

Hammon comes into this week riding a 3 game winning streak from last week. The Warriors look to be a contender in Class B again. However, Hammon has lost 3 games to top Class B teams already – Dover, Calumet, and Leedey. It is safe to say that the Warriors need a win here to feel better about themselves going forward.

Canute Trojans (A, 10-4) vs #7 Navajo Indians (A, 10-4), Tuesday, September 1

Both of these teams come in with an identical record of 10-4. They are also familiar with each other as they’ve been a couple of the best Class A teams out west the last few seasons.

On paper, Canute is one of the favorites in Class A. They won the Class A-2 State championship in the Spring and return several of their players.

Navajo played in the Class A-2 State Tournament last Spring, but they came into this Fall with some injuries according to head coach, Weston Winters. Navajo is playing their best baseball of the season at this point. They beat Canute in the 2nd round then Ft Cobb-Broxton in the next round of the H-E Tournament before losing to Dale in the winner bracket final. They await the winner of Leedey/FCB in the loser bracket final on Monday.

Latta Panthers (2A, 7-5) vs #3 Byng Pirates (2A, 8-1), Thursday, September 4

This is a matchup of 2 teams that know each other well. Both schools are located just 10 miles apart in Ponotoc County. They’ve already played this season in the finals of the Tupelo Tournament where Byng held on to win 3-2.

Don’t sleep on the fact that Latta’s record is “only” 7-5. Their five losses come against Calumet, Preston, Byng, Okarche, and Colbert. Each of those games were close ball games even the Preston loss as it was a 1-1 tie going into the 6th inning. Latta does have a win over Ft Cobb-Broxton and they gave Silo their only loss of the season.

Byng comes in this week after finishing as a runner up to Okarche in the Roff Tournament. That game was 0-0 going into the 7th before Okarche broke through with 4 runs and hold on to win, 4-2.

#2 Okarche Warriors (A, 12-1) vs Wright City (A, 7-4), Saturday, September, 6 (at Seminole State College)

This game stuck out to us at the beginning of the season as it is truly a neutral site game being played at Seminole State College.

No need to go over Okarche as we did above.

Wright City comes into the week after being snake bit last week with weather and not playing a game. At 7-4, the defending Class A State Champs in both the Fall and Spring last year, the Lumberjax have had a bit of a slow start to this Fall season. While their 4 losses are to teams that are nothing to sneeze at (Silo, Stuart, OCA, and Union City) it is the fact they were shut out in 2 of those and score only 1 in another that is surprising.

Wright City still has the talent that allows them to play with anyone, and they look to show that against the top team in Class A.
