When Sooner State Baseball Report started in 2023, one of the things we did was try to evaluate who the best high school team in the state is relative to their level of play. We did that by creating the SSBR Dominant Dozen.

We take a look at who each team’s performance and the level of competition they have played. As the season goes on, head to head competition will obviously become more of a factor as well.

For example, are we saying that teams at the lower classes are better than say the top 6A teams? Maybe, maybe not. Most of the top upper teams have more depth than the lower class teams and they would most likely win a series with them. But relative to their level, those lower class teams may be having a better season than the upper class teams.

It is not an exact science, but when we do the rankings we look at a number of factors. Win/loss record. How is that team doing against their own class? How did they do versus teams in classifications higher than theirs? District play for 3A-6A teams. Head to head.

Using those factors we rank the teams based on how they are doing relative to their level.

As a reminder, our first two Dominant Dozen champs were Tuttle (4A) in 2023 and Oktaha (2A) in 2024.

*The Rankings this year have expanded to 16, thus the “Sweet Sixteen.”

This is for fun, so please treat it as such.

Let’s take a look at the rankings for the final poll. (All state champions were ranked 1-9.)

1. Blanchard Lions (4A, 35-1)

Blanchad is the 2025 SSBR Sweet Sixteen champs as they finished a season where they did not lose to a team from Oklahoma on their way to a 4A State Championship. Their lone loss came to Pensacola Catholic on their Spring Break trip to Florida. The Lions finished the season on a 27 game heater after that loss.

The Lions dominated 4A teams going 25-0 on the season with wins over 4A state teams, Chickasha, Bethany, and Tuttle twice (including the state championship game). Blanchard also beat fellow state champs Duncan (5A) and Ft Cobb-Broxton (B).

2. Wright City Lumberjax (A-1, 30-3)

Wright City comes in at #2 after winning the Class A-1 State Championship. The Jax lost only 3 games this season with one to an out of state team and the other two only one run losses to 5A semifinalist, Pryor, and Class A-2 #1 ranked and semifinalist, Rattan.

WC ended the season on a 16 game winning streak and won games vs other classification state teams in Lone Grove, Asher, Tupelo, Silo, Battiest (2x), Latta, and Durant. Too bad rain robbed us of a late season matchup at Blanchard.

Also, while the Fall season does not have any bearing on the Spring Sweet Sixteen, Wright City was our Fall Elite Eight champs winning the Class A Fall State Championship. The Jax were a combined 63-5 this school year.

3. Duncan Demons (5A, 36-6)

Duncan moves all the way up to #3 after winning the Class 5A State Championship. The Demons finished the season winning 19 of 20 games including 3 agains rival and 5A runner up, Elgin.

Duncan had wins against other classes’ state tournament teams Washington, Marlow, Calumet, and Chickasha. Of the Demons’ six losses, five of them came against State Tournament teams.

4. Ft Cobb-Broxton Mustangs (B, 26-9)

The Mustangs come in at #4 it the Sweet 16 after dominating Class B and winning the State Championship. It is the 6th straight state championship (both Fall and Spring).

FCB dominated the lower classes as they went 14-0 vs Class B teams and 20-0 overall vs teams in B up through 2A. Of the Mustangs’ 9 losses, 7 of them were to teams who played in their respective state tournaments from 3A up through 6A.

5. Edmond Santa Fe Wolves (6A, 36-7)

One of the favorites in 6A, Edmond Santa Fe seemed to be having a hard time getting their footing in the first half of the season. After a loss to rival, Edmond Memorial, the Wolves were at 17-7 before they reeled off 19 straight wins en route to a 6A State Championship.

During that span the Wolves swept fellow state team Piedmont in District play, as well as other state teams in Stillwater, Ft Cobb-Broxton, Noble, and Broken Arrow before beating Owasso in the championship avenging 2 losses previously to the Rams.

The Wolves also had wins over Dale, Edmond North, and Choctaw (2x).

6. Tushka Tigers (2A-2, 29-6)

Tushka won the 2A-2 State Championship with a win over the coaches’ #1 team, Ketchum. The Tigers finished the season on a 9 game winning streak as they went’ perfect in the postseason.

The Tigers went 10-0 vs 2A teams as well as 10-0 vs teams in higher classes. Their wins included other state teams Durant, Latta, Preston, Oktaha, Tupelo, Stonewall, as well as ending Dewar’s 29 game winning streak to open the season.

7. Cashion Wildcats (2A-1, 33-3)

Cashion takes the 7 spot after winning the 2A-1 State Championship. The Wildcats played mostly within both classes in 2A going 25-1. Their 3 losses came in close games to Edmond North, Okarche, and Calera (all state tournament teams). Cashion did avenge the loss to Calera in the state championship game run ruling the Bulldogs, 15-5.

8. Washington Warriors (3A, 27-10)

On paper, Washington did not have the season they have become accustomed to….until the postseaon. The Warriors turned things around going undefeated in their Regional, sweeping #11 Valliant in Areas, then beating the #3 seed Lone Grove, #2 Silo, and finally #1 Marlow to win the State Championship. Not only that, it was the Warriors 4th straight state title as 3A still runs through Washington.

9. Canute Trojans (A-2, 24-4)

Canute rounds out our last state champion as they won the Class A-2 title. The Trojans had been in the Sweet Sixteen for a few weeks before a stretch in April saw them lose 3 of 4 games. However, they put it together after that going undefeated in the postseason (6-0) outscoring their opponenets 49-5.

The Trojans had wins over state teams Navajo, Walters, AmPo, Ripley, Shattuck, and Dibble.

10. Owasso Rams (6A, 39-3)

Owasso is the top ranked non state champ coming in at #10. The Rams won the most games in the state this season and was the 6A favorite coming into the postseason. They had winning streaks of 22 and 14 games at different points in the season including a 7 game stretch where they did not allow a run.

Wins for the Rams included Stillwater, Edmond Santa Fe (2x), Salina, Carl Albert, Bixby (2x), Tuttle, Broken Arrow, and Choctaw.

11. Tuttle Tigers (4A, 34-8)

Tuttle once again had a say in the State Championship picture as they were runner up to Blanchard losing a 9-8 game. The Tigers had a 27-4 record vs 4A opponents with multiple wins over Elk City, Heritage Hall, and Newcastle (with the 2nd one in the State seminfinals).

Tuttle’s schedule was as good as any. Their losses included Washington, Edmond Memorial, Owasso, Chickasha, and Bethany.

12. Newcastle Racers (4A, 35-5)

Newcastle stormed out of the gate this season with wins over Edmond Santa Fe, Owasso, and Broken Arrow over the first weekend of the season. They kept it up over the span of the season with wins over the likes of Bethany, Elgin, Duncan, Chickasha, Lone Grove, CCS, and Washington.

The fact that they lost to Tuttle in the State seminfinal game puts them one spot behind Tuttle.

13. Dale Pirates (2A-1, 28-5)

Perhaps the biggest way to describe how good the Pirates were this season was how shocking it was when the Pirates got upset in the opening game of the 2A-1 State Tournament. Coming into that game, the Pirates had won 15 of 16 games with some of them against top level teams.

The Pirates beat the likes of North Rock Creek, Marlow, Lone Grove, Jones, Newcastle, Canute, Dibble, and Calera. They also beat Noble, Stillwater, and Elgin dominating the Bill Tipton Classic.

14. Wister Wildcats (A-1, 27-4)

Wister makes their debut in the Sweet 16, but they’ve been on the radar for the last half of the season. The Wilcats quietly made their coming down the stretch of the season.

Of their 3 losses before the state title game, two of them were to #1 Rattan which Wister did win the 3rd game vs the Rams. Wister won games vs other state teams Tushka, Colbert, Oktaha, Panama (2x), Arapaho-Butler, and AmPo.

15. Elgin Owls (5A, 30-8)

When it was all said and done, Elgin was clearly the 2nd best team in 5A. Not only did they finish as the class’ runner up, they were an undefeated, 21-0, against 5A teams not named Duncan.

Outside of their 2 wins at the state tournament, the Owls had wins over other state teams Edmond North, Marlow, and FCB (2x).

16. Stillwater Pioneers (6A, 25-7)

Stillwater comes in at 16 on the back of a strong 2nd half of the season that saw them sweep Bixby in the last week of the season winning their District. They also went on to make the State Tournament before getting upset in the opening round by 1 run. The Pioneers played one of, if not, the toughest schedule in the state with only 3 games outside Class 6A.
