When Sooner State Baseball Report started last year, we tried to find different and fun content about baseball in the Sooner State that we thought people would enjoy. One of the ways we did that was to start ranking the 30 different college teams in the state. And that’s how the Power 10 was “born.”
Each week until the postseason, we will rank what we think are the 10 best teams in the state relative to their level. We will look at the results of each team based on the level of their competition compared to the other teams in the state.
Does that mean if a junior college team is ranked ahead of an NCAA D1 team we think that JUCO would be the D1? No it doesn’t. But it does mean we think that the JUCO team is playing better than the D1 at their respective levels.
Here is where we think things stand right now (through games on Mar 24).
Please remember this is for fun and should be treated as such.
Teams Dropping Out of the Power Ten
Oklahoma Sooners (Prev: 8): Went 1-3 last week getting swept by Lamar on the weekend; Oklahoma Baptist Bison (Prev: 10): Went 2-2 last week with the 2 losses to ECU who was previously 6-28.
Teams Receiving Consideration for Power 10
- None
10. Oklahoma State Cowboys (18-10), NCAA D1
Prev: NR
The Cowboys come back into the Power 10 after being out the last couple of weeks. OSU went 3-1 last week winning on the road at Wichita State in the midweek and taking 2 of 3 against West Virginia.
OSU has won their last 2 Big 12 series and seem to be more consistent the last couple of weeks.
This week: Tues vs ORU; Fri-Sun vs OU
9. USAO Drovers (21-11), NAIA
Prev: NR
It’s hard to believe, but USAO hasn’t been in the Power 10 since February. The Drovers have been on the cusp several times since then, but with a few teams plummeting out of the Power 10 and the Drovers’ consistent play recentley, it’s time USAO comes back in the Power 10.
USAO has won 6 of their last 7 games including winning their last 2 Sooner Athletic Conference series.
This week: Tues vs SWOSU; Fri-Sat at Wayland Baptist
8. OCU Stars (22-12), NAIA
Prev: 7
The Stars went 1-2 last week dropping their series at SW Assemblies of God. However, OCU stays in the Power 10 on the basis of their strong overall schedule and high Bo Chip ranking.
This week: Fri-Sat vs Southwestern Christian
7. NWOSU Rangers (23-12), NCAA D2
Prev: 9
The Rangers went 3-1 last week including a series win (2-1) over Southeastern OK State.
NWOSU is in a 5 way tie for 2nd place in the GAC standings 2 games behind Southern Arkansas. The Rangers still have a series in a few weeks at Southern Arkansas so if NWOSU can hold serve against the other teams, they have a legitimate chance to win the regular season title.
This week: Fri-Sat vs East Central
6. Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles (23-11), NAIA
Prev: 3
OKWU dropped 3 spots this week after going 1-2 last week. They lost a 10-1 game that was called in the 5th inning due to field conditions at MACU and split a 2 game set with Park.
The Eagles are still atop the KCAC standings one game ahead of Tabor and two ahead of Kansas Wesleyan.
This week: Tues at Evangel (DH); Fri-Sat vs Bethany
5. NOC Enid Jets (25-11), NJCAA D2
Prev: 6
The Jets went 2-2 last week, but the two wins came against rival, NOC Tonkawa, as they won the conference series 2-1.
Enid is still in 1st place for the Oklahoma schools in Region 2 and overall in Region 2 at 10-2 in league play. The two losses came against 2nd place Western last week.
The Jets are also ranked 19th nationally in the latest NJCAA D2 poll.
This week: Fri-Sat at Carl Albert State College
4. Connors State Cowboys (32-5), NJCAA D1
Prev: 2
It may seem harsh to drop the Cowboys 2 spots after they went 4-1 last week, but 2 of Connors’ wins last week were against OKWU’s JV team and the loss was to Rose St who was 13-16 prior to that game.
Also, the two teams that jumped Connors had perfect weeks last week.
This week: Tues vs Crowder; Thurs vs NEO; Sat at NEO (DH)
3. Western OK State Pioneers (25-10), NJCAA D2
Prev: 5
Speaking of the team that beat NOC Enid and one of the two that went undefeated last week, we have the team from Altus.
The Pioneers took all three games vs Redlands. They sit at 11-4 in conference only one game behind Enid and have separated themselves from the rest of the Oklahoma teams in conference (3 games).
This week: Tues vs Amarillo College; Fri-Sat vs Murray State
2. MACU Evangels (24-8), NAIA
Prev: 4
MACU has been in the Power 10 since the first week and it looked at times like it was a stretch. With a 12-8 record at one point it looked on the surface as such. But they had shown at point in those first 20 games that they could be the team the way they are playing now.
The Evangels have won 12 games in a row and are 16-3 in their last 19 games. In that stretch, MACU has won series against USAO and MACU and beat nationally ranked OKWU. (MACU is now ranked #22 nationally themselves.)
This week: Fri-Sat vs SW Assemblies of God
1. UCO Bronchos (27-7), NCAA D2
Prev: 1
From this week’s “Five Things”
The Bronchos went a perfect 4-0 last week with all 4 coming against MIAA foes. They beat NSU on Tuesday and swept Emporia State over the weekend.
UCO has now moved into 3rd place in the MIAA standings 4 games back of Central Missouri but only 1 game back of Missouri Southern who the Bronchos face this coming weekend in Joplin (after a home game vs SNU this Tuesday).
This week: Tues vs SNU; Fri-Sun at Missouri Southern
