When Sooner State Baseball Report started last year, we tried to find different and fun content about baseball in the Sooner State that we thought people would enjoy. One of the ways we did that was to start ranking the 30 different college teams in the state. And that’s how the Power 10 was “born.”

Each week until the postseason, we will rank what we think are the 10 best teams in the state relative to their level. We will look at the results of each team based on the level of their competition compared to the other teams in the state.

Does that mean if a junior college team is ranked ahead of an NCAA D1 team we think that JUCO would be the D1? No it doesn’t. But it does mean we think that the JUCO team is playing better than the D1 at their respective levels.

Here is where we think things stand right now (through games on Mar 11).

Please remember this is for fun and should be treated as such.

Teams Dropped From the Power 10

  • Rogers State Hillcats (Prev 2): went 0-3 including 2 run rules vs Pittsburg St
  • Oklahoma City Stars (Prev 8): went 1-2 vs MACU including a run rule loss

Teams Close to Making the Power 10 (in alphabetical order)

Oklahoma Baptist (14-9); Oklahoma City Stars (15-10); Rogers State (13-7); USAO (14-8); Western OK State (16-7)

10. SWOSU Bulldogs (15-8), NCAA D2

Last week: 9

To be honest, the Bulldogs were literally one pitch from NOT being in the Power 10 this week. Yes, they won the series vs ECU, but they did lose a game to at team that had won just one game in conference before then.

OBU would’ve been the #10 team if they hadn’t gotten walked off by a grand slam against SE Oklahoma State on Monday.

This week: Fri-Sat vs Harding (3 games)

9. Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-6), NCAA D1

Last week: 6

The Cowboys also was on their way out of the Power 10 themselves, but other teams losing kept them in. Yes they did win more games than they lost last week (3-2), but those 2 losses were to Utah Tech and Mercer – not exactly juggernauts.

This week: Tues at Oklahoma; Fri-Sun at UCF (3 games)

8. MACU Evangels (13-8), NAIA

Last week: 4

This may be more of a course correction to put MACU in this position than it is a reflection of the past week or couple of weeks.

MACU has won both of their SAC series against USAO and OCU to start the season, however they’ve lost their last 2 non conference games to Tabor (although Tabor is on an 11 game heater right now).

This week: Fri-Sat vs Central Christian (3 games)

7. OK Wesleyan Eagles (15-7), NAIA

Last week: NR

The Eagles make their first ranking of the 2024 season and it comes on the heels of 6 straight wins (10 of their last 11). In fact, the Eagles are currently sitting in 1st place in the KCAC standings.

OKWU has a big week ahead as they really get into the meat of their schedule. They’ve got 5 games against the 2 teams right behind them in the KCAC.

This week: Tues vs Tabor (DH); Fri-Sat vs Avila (3 games)

6. NWOSU Rangers (16-7), NCAA D2

Last week: 5

If they Rangers were to lose 1 of their 4 games last week, then they lost the correct one. However, it was to Newman in the midweek game.

NWOSU did sweep SNU to keep pace in the GAC standings, but they had to do 2 of those games in the comeback fashion including a walk off.

This week: Tues vs OPSU; Fri-Sat vs Arkansas Tech

5. Oklahoma Sooners (9-5) NCAA D1

Last week: NR

What a difference a week makes. After a dismal weekend in Las Vegas leaving them at 5-5, the Sooners had a perfect 4-0 week.

After beating Wichita St on Tuesday, OU made a statement against a hot UCF team in their opening Big 12 Conference series.

There is no question that the Sooners are talented, it is just a matter if they can put it all together on a consistent basis like they did against UCF.

This week: Tues vs OSU; Wed at UTA; Fri-Sun at TCU

4. NOC Enid Jets (19-6), NJCAA D2

Last week: 10

The Jets make the huge jump riding a 10 game winning streak. The Jets are averaging over 10 runs a game in that span as well.

Sitting on top of the West Region 2 standings at 6-0, the Jets have another big week ahead.

This week: Fri-Sat vs Murray State (3 games); Sun at Allen County CC

3. NOC Tonkawa Mavericks (21-6), NJCAA D2

Last week: 7

Much like the Jets, the Mavs are riding high. They are currently on a 9 game winning streak.

Tonkawa also sits at 6-0 and tied with Enid in the standings.

This week: Fri-Sat at Western OK State College (3 games)

2. UCO Bronchos (18-5), NCAA D2

Last week: 3

UCO is at #2 this week, but the gap between them and #1 is close.

The ‘Chos swept their conference series over the weekend and split a double header at OBU in the midweek going 4-1 on the week.

Because of the sweep over Newman, the ‘Chos are back over .500 in conference.

This week: Tues vs Northeastern St; Fri-Sun vs Fort Hays State

1. Connors State Cowboys (22-2), NJCAA D1

Last week: 1

Welp, it happened. The Cowboys lost a game…two to be exact.

CSC lost their early week game in a back and forth affair against a good UA Mountain Home.

Then after beating Eastern 30-6 on Saturday, the Cowboys dropped game 2 of their series vs the Mountaineers before winning game 3.

If the previous #2 Rogers State hadn’t had the week they had or if UCO had beaten OBU both games, maybe they would’ve been #1. Regardless, the gap between CSC and the rest of the Power 10 is closer than it was last week.
